| New Install - Cable Modem Problems
I recently moved into a new place, and signed up for the optimum triple play. In the place there are 4 cable jacks on the wall, in various different rooms. On the main jack in the living room, everything works fine, cable modem has good signal( approximately a -1 reading on the modem info page), and 8300HDs work fine. On the other 3 jacks in the place, only the 8300HDs work, the cable modem(SBV5120) fails to lock into a signal and just sits there with the US light blinking. On the modem info page the signal levels are all between -7 and -9, which should be in spec.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I guess that I have a bad cable somewhere that splits somewhere after that first jack in the living room, but I don't know where it is. It's not convenient to have the cable modem hooked up in the living room, I need to have it in the office so that I can have a hard-wired internet connection to my desktop computer and file-server. How can it be possible for the 8300HDs to get perfect picture, but yet the cable modem will not function at all? |

1 edit | You have noted the Downstream power levels on all the jacks (and at -7dBmV to -9dBmV, they DO all appear to be in spec)... But, How do the Signal-to-Noise, and UPstream power levels look?
Signal-to-Noise: is it GREATER than 30dB? Upstream Power Level: is it LESS than 55dBmV?
If all the Splitters are properly rated, but the S/N Ratio and/or Upstream Power readings are out-of-spec on those jacks, then something may be wrong with either the Coax cables, or the Connectors going to the Wall jacks themselves...
(Edit): If the Modem's UPstream signal is "borderline" on the "Good" jack, then place a Trouble call to CV for a "Max Transmit" problem, and have them come out and check your cable line from the 'Grounding Block' (where the cable drop connects to your house), back to the 'tap' at the Pole...

I tried one of the free On Demand titles on the BAD jack and it worked fine. |

| reply to TJtv Original install was on 6/27, nothing worked. They came back on 7/2, which is when I discovered the one GOOD jack in the living room. A couple of guys pulled a new wire through the attic and changed a few splitters in the attic, but it didn't help anything.
They are coming back this Saturday, but honestly I didn't have much hope of them getting it to work. That's why I asked the question here. Would the fact that the upstream signal level is 54 dbmv mean that the signal needs to be amplified before entering the apartment? If so, that sounds good, since I'm reluctant to have them do any more fishing wires through the walls and attic. |

1 edit | 54 dBmV is borderline.....you could experience issues with that upstream level or higher. Either a couple of splits need to be removed/replaced, bad/loose coax cable somewhere along the line, problems up at the pole. If an amp will do the trick though after all those issues are sorted out, then I'd hope it works. |

@optonline.net | reply to TJtv where do you live? Are contractors coming out? You need inhouse techs to come check it out. |

·Cablevision
| reply to TJtv It could be anything from a bad splitter to a bad fitting to older, out of spec cabling. Have the tech come out and diagnose the problem. That's what they are paid to do, and you pay for it in your monthly service fee.
If the problem is found to be in your cabling, you should have it replaced...but as edisontech said, CV does not fish cable through walls. If you want that sort of work done, you'll need to do it yourself or get someone else in who knows what they are doing. You might also offer the tech a good tip and he could agree to do it for you. Otherwise, Cablevision will run the cable along the outside of your house and the baseboards. |
