| wrecked my car jack
I was trying to lift a little too much with my trusty old 2.5 ton floor jack, and now it's barely working. (it can't even lift my car any more, I just hear a faint 'whoshing' sound) It's not leaking any oil, and there's no other sign of damage.
I have yet to take one apart -- any ide on what could've failed? O-ring? Seal? Piston? -- And the winner is: |

| You blew out the seal. Its no longer safe to use. Replace. Do not attempt repair. Go to walmart and get a new one for $15. Don't trust your life to a now faulty piece of equipment. I've seen accidents where a jack has given out, not pretty. -- »KmanScooters.com Home of Wisconsin's Most Affordable Cars, Motorcycles and Scooters |

Not long ago, we had a funeral for a local fire chief who died when his jack failed.
Fixed or replaced, please use a safety stand if you are going to get under the car. -- Illinois: where the governors make the license plates! |

| reply to aurgathor yup, once raised, ALWAYS put safety stands underneath...remember, a jack isn't for holding the vehicle up, just getting it up there. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

| reply to aurgathor either its the check valve (balls and cup) or the release valve/seat is damaged.
Chances are you wont find the parts unless its something like a Torin, Craftsman, Mac, SnapOn etc...
I have seen some come with seals, cups, check balls wen brand new...

Will take apart anyhow, just to see what happened with it. -- And the winner is: |

1 edit | reply to aurgathor Find a tool repair shop (that works on air and hydraulic tools) and they can fix it or can sell you a kit to overhaul it if it is a quality design...
I always suggest that people spend a bit higher on a jack and jack stand set, usually 6 tons. It won't need replacing like a 2 ton. |

Only true if you have a junk or cheap jack as a quality jack can be rebuilt to be same as new. That is a $80+ jack, not a cheap jack that is meant to be thrown away. Depends on what the OP has.
said by Anonuser :Don't trust your life to a now faulty piece of equipment. I've seen accidents where a jack has given out, not pretty. Only when people are mis-using the jack like it was a jack stand which it was never designed for handing that type of job. A jack isn't designed to stay under a constant load (it does for safety, not design).
Jacks are only for raising and lowering a vehicle. Jack Stands are for supporting a raised vehicle.
