1 edit | 2 year wait for new Smartphone unfair in this case!
I bought a W580i Sony phone about 14 months ago as a Hardware Upgrade (HUP). 6 months ago I bought a Nokia E71 OUTRIGHT and added a plan that supported data. I do not need a new phone but my ability to upgrade at this point is restricted to non Smartphones only. I understand the fact that if you Start or HUP a contract with a Smartphone subsidy you must wait two years for a new Smartphone... as lame is that is considering the warranty only protects our for 1 year... that's another argument tho. Rogers retention department told me there was nothing they would to do resolve the situation and that this is the way it works. I think it is very inappropriate, would anyone disagree with me? |

| well, it might sound crappy, but if they are going to subsidize the cost of the handset, they can pretty much dictate the terms...there is nothing stopping you from buying the unit outright, any time you want. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

if you want the smartphone for $29, wait the appropriate time the carrier needs so they can afford to sell it to you at that price...i don't understand what you are complaining about. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

| Exactly... It not like I even want an upgrade right now, the E71 is serious. I just know its wrong and messed up that my upgrade status is in such a place. I can see this becoming a larger problem as more and more people realize after doing everything they could to avoid re commitment and HUP credit consumption that they are stuck with a w370 when their Blackberry packs it in 14 months into a contract. |

| I assume that because you bought the phone outright that you don't have a contract either. This could be a reason why they aren't willing to do an HUP.
All things considered, I won't be locking into a contract in future with any carrier as I want more flexibility to play hard ball in terms of negotiating the best possible deal. |

| reply to Robrr ah, OK...that makes sense then...so i assume he paid something like $500 for the E71?
if he truly did pay full price for the unit, i can't see why his upgrade eligibility has changed, because it shouldn't...perhaps there are some Rogers employees in here that can confirm. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

| reply to r011 Within recent months if Rogers sees a smartphone on your account then you can only do a hardware upgrade every 24 months instead of every 12 months.
You can still do a hardware upgrade to a non-smartphone every 12 months. -- My employer is in no way responsible for my views/suggestions/posts made in this forum. |

Yes but they have records of actual HUPs, if there wasn't any on the account, it doesn't apply to the HUP limit and he is supposed to be eligible for a HUP now. If they're going just by the phone attached to the account they need to change the procedure. |

| that is what i am thinking...the employee probably just thought he bought the phone through the HUP...Rogers and Bell upgrade programs are very similar. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

| so, did you pay something like $500 for your E71?
perhaps you used a small HUP credit when you did get it 6 months ago...where are you in your contract terms (and don't go by what you think you are, you need to find out for sure)...if you truly paid for the phone outright, and didn't renew your contract, you should be eligible (although, if you did just do an upgrade 14 months ago, come to think of it, you probably aren't eligible for the best pricing yet)...you will probably have to wait until at least the 2 year mark before you can get the special deals...that is how it is like with Bell. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

| reply to dirtyjeffer You can buy an Iphone with a plan for 299, or you can buy the phone outright for $780 (last price I saw on the Rogers checkout)
So if r011 purchased the phone (no contract) then he has absolutely every right to be furious. -- It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses. |

| i agree, but he hasn't answered that question yet, despite me asking him twice (which leads me to think he may have received a "deal" already)...also, since Rogers is pretty much the same as Bell and Telus in terms of their upgrade policy, even if he did pay full price for the E71 a few months ago, it might just have been entered incorrectly and why it shows up that way...also, he has only had his plan for 14 months, so for fun, leave the E71 out of the discussion...he wouldn't be eligible for anything anyway. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

Actually he would probably be eligible for a HUP with a flip phone as the minimum is 12 months, at the very least with only a small discount. Smart phones are the only exception with 2 year HUP. |

| said by mlerner :Umm yes there is because he didn't HUP the phone from Rogers so their records are incorrect. that doesn't matter...it has still only been 14 months since he renewed last time...the amount of credit you are eligible for after only 14 months is minimal (i think might give you $50 off) so if Rogers is giving him a free regular phone, that is pretty good. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |
