1 edit | Free Internet Near My House But signal is Weak - Booster?
I live in an area where the local library offers free internet access. From my house i am able to pick up the access point but because my house is just a bit too far the signal is very weak and so internet access through it from my house is inconsistent, slow, or just doesnt work....but of course, if i walk outside with my laptop by about 10 extra feet the internet acess works flawlessly.
Is there a device i can attach to my computer or somethng that can better pick up this signal from the library so i can have full uninterrupted free internet access or must a parabola-like tin-foil thingy (pointing the signal directly to my house) have to be at the accesspoint (at the library) for the signal strength to be boosted? |

1 edit | If you have a USB/PCI wireless network card, you can purchase an antenna.

Make sure that the antenna fits your card though. |

| Don't forget to include a few turns of RF-choking to keep the noise-levels under control:

| reply to corezz An external, more directional antenna would be your best bet.
Since the library source is always in the same direction, a directional antenna pointed that way will give you maximum gain.
Some antennas can be made out of cans, etc, and adds to the fun. |

| reply to corezz lol... >_> Dont try the cell phone thing. It was meant as a joke, and doesn't work... :P
Follow the other advice for Antennas... You can make you own cheap one with a few items... up to a kinda expensive (Unless you have spare parts) ones out of an expressvu Sat dish, that can pickup signals up to a mile (or more/less, just a guess!). |

| reply to Ikarasu LOL..tells you how gullable i am...as you can tell i have NO CLUE about all of this wireless stuff :P ... A lot of the links here are very interesting...now i understand i will need an external antenna (and great idea about a directional antenna to boost the signal)....out of curiosity i think i will try going with the DIY techniques so i can learn more about how wireless works. |

| reply to Ikarasu A proper 15dBi parabolic antenna for 802.11b/g and low-loss cable will allow you to pickup signals from even a normal access point antenna at several miles, as long as you don't have any obstructions in the wave pattern Fresnel zone.
I have used about 20 miles line-of-sight over water 802.11b connection, with parabolics at each end elevated to about 400' above sea level (island to island). That's pretty much the limit without exceeding the legally allowed power output at each end. |

1 edit | reply to corezz Plenty of info here - »www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cante···wto.html with links to more.
I've bought certain bits and pieces here - »wardrivingworld.com/
You can also do a google search for "cantennas" to find alot more info.
Good luck |

@teksavvy.com | reply to corezz Or set up one of these outdoors: »www.ubnt.com/products/nano.php
Or go with a Bullet2(HP) and a dedicated antenna.
This would be the most proper non-hack way to do it. |
