I was picking a quart of raspberries in my back yard when I saw a half size Japanese Beetle. I had no hands free to smash the thing. Next I will have to check my hops vines and birch tree. |

Actually, judging from the newspaper reports last year, and from the threads on this forum, the japanese beetles were new to this area last year, and devastating. I cannot recall seeing them before last year. I also witnessed how birch and other trees were munched beyond recognition. No I do not mean the Asian Longhorn beetle. In the spring of 2008 I did see a couple of emerald ash borers by the Fox River near St. Charles, but so far none this year, although there is a bad infestation in West St. Charles. |

| reply to snipper_cr said by snipper_cr :Grossly offtopic but you grow Hops? What type? I planted them a year ago when the prices shot up, and now they are growing strong, already producing cones. The variety is called Sterling, which is similar to Saaz. I am not satisfied with its taste, but dread having to uproot the whole thing this autmn to try a different variety. |

| My readings on growing hops are that they should have at least 2 full years until their cones are produced properly. Something about quantity and flavors. I've never grown them or know anything about them, just from what I've read. -- The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. CPL:IA;ASEL/AMEL. CFI:ASE/AME; IA |

The hops smelled wonderfully bitter, they did not impair enough flavor to the malt. Not that I wouldn't drink it anyway, but there is only so much beer-can chicken to make. |

1 edit | Yeah I would give them another season to make cones and see how they turn out, you might get better bittering and flavoring from them. I myself would love a Cascade Hops vine.
How long did you boil them for? How much? Its probably just the viability of the hops as opposed to amount/boil time but figured id ask.
edit: do what I mean, not what I say. -- The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. CPL:IA;ASEL/AMEL. CFI:ASE/AME; IA |

I was working at a friends house cleaning their backyard and we have a bunch of brush we collected thats been sitting around. I have a feeling near the ground where it is muddy there will be a collection of earwigs also. Might just put some rocks around it and light the whole lot of it up... -- The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. CPL:IA;ASEL/AMEL. CFI:ASE/AME; IA |
