UVerse latency issues with online gaming, alternatives?

In part due to my recommendations a co-worker who previously had Elite DSL switched to UVerse TV, Elite HSI and Voice. The TV and Voice are fine but his son is besides himself with issues related to online gaming. My gut feeling is it's related to the increased latency inherent to UVerse's interleaved profile.
I'm not sure what I can suggest to him. Lineshared DSL worked great for his son's gaming but UVerse seems very poor.
If the son is the only one online it's tolerable but as soon as a second Uverse user (my co-worker in this example) uses the Internet his son is bounced off the gaming server due to high pings (or whatever its called in online gaming jargon).
Any suggestions appreciated as to what I can offer my co-worker as alternatives/workarounds etc.
TIA

I game while others use the internet all the time and never have a problem.

The circumstances in which what you describe happen would be interesting to know.

Also what HSI tier are they on? What do you mean uses the internet? Is he downloading something, streaming or just surfing the net?

Elite HSI
Surfing, he opens a browser, Yahoo appears, son slams down his mouse in disgust.
Game is World of Warcraft (WOW).
ATT installed a 2-wire wireless adapter in pc due to the fact the UV RG is not located in the son's room. The DSL modem was.
So another difference would be son's PC is wireless connected on UV whereas it was hardwired on DSL.
I asked co-worker to check tonight and see what kind of connection quality the wi-fi adapter is getting.

I am guessing it might be more of a wifi issue that's causing major latency? Is elite 6 megs?

Elite in 6Mbs.
Hardwiring the PC to the RG would be difficult. I think that's why the installed went with WiFi. Perhaps the son is paying the price for that shortcut?

It could be, if a device is having poor wireless signal it can throw off the network and bring things down.

Have they tried changing channels on the RG?

That sounds like classic interference. Is the second computer also connected via WiFi? Sometimes changing the WiFi channel will help. The RG is supposed to auto detect interference but it may be worthwhile to try and troubleshoot with that.

As a matter of record though U-verse in general plays nice with online gaming. I play WoW and Xbox Live and have had no problems. The difference in latency was almost negligible coming from DSL and is still far more reliable than the cable modem before that. We often have 2 HD streams and 2 computers connected running at the same time.

I doubt he's tried changing any wireless settings.
What I suggested to him and he's game to try is relocate the son's PC into the room with the RG and patch it into the RG via his old ethernet cable. If things improve then it's a Wi-Fi issue. At which point he'll ask ATT to come out again to run the cable from the RG back to the son's room (as should have probably been done originally?).
I'll know more tomorrow if he's able to move the son's PC.

Yes it is. Both (he only has two) PCs are Wi-Fi attached.

I'm sure the RG Wi-Fi settings are at default (unless the installer changed them).
Since both of his workstations are W-Fi attached I'd be hesitant in recommending he make changes to the Wi-Fi settings. He could lock himself out altogether.

Is the RG Wi-Fi factory default: Channel = Auto ??

I am not sure what the default is since I changed all that. My guess is probably set to auto maybe one of the PT's or Tier II guys can answer that.

I think you having him move the PC is the correct move right now and safest. Plus it will rule out the wife very easily.

I have learned that desktops should really be wired in my experience. My setup was 2 laptops wireless, iPhone wireless and my desktop wired. Now I just have 1 laptop still wireless but I have never noticed a difference gaming, streaming, downloading, etc.

I've helped someone with this issue before, it was the fact that they were playing over Wireless. The best idea is to get the PC hard wired. Another option if it's available in his area is for the tech to install the Asoka ethernet over power adapters. This would eliminate the running of hard line (Or you can pick them up yourself at Newegg for cheap »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···33122166) And then you could just use the existing power lines in your house as your "hard lined connection" But unless you're using Wireless N, I would never use wireless for gaming, just have seen a lot of bad throughput on wireless G, plus everyone uses it, so you get a lot of interference.

Thanks, Matt

P.S. If you can get his billing account number and a good call back number, I would be more than happy to call him and setup a dispatch with him if need be.

Thanks all. I tend to agree with the Wi-Fi being the issue. Matt, would AT&T typically supply and install the Asoka Ethernet over power adapters if needed?

If we find the wireless to be the problem, yes, and I believe it's also free (Don't quote me on this, I could be incorrect, really depends on the tech) if we find the wireless to be the issue, but the other reason I posted the link to the Newegg is because the ethernet over power adapters aren't available everywhere, and we are still testing them in certain areas. But it's also a cheap/quicker way to get it done instead of waiting on a tech, and then waiting an hour or so for them to run the cable and patch it and etc.

Thanks, Matt.

I discussed this discussion with him this morning. He was unable to move the PC last night. If he choses to pursue with Matt I will forward the particulars via IM when he gives them to me.
So for now I'm in a holding pattern.
Tnx all.

Just called him today, and he said there weren't any issues after they installed and hooked up the adapters, so looks like it's been taken care of, though I will be watching over it for 2 more days to make sure.

Thanks, Matt.

He stopped by my desk first thing this morning and said he had installed the Ethernet over Powerline adapters. He said so far his son has not been dropped but he added that this part of the week isn't the busiest either. He needed a little longer Cat5 jumper so I gave him one I had squirrled away in my desk. That should make his setup complete.
Thanks again.

No problem and you're welcome, I will try and keep up with this and make sure that everything is good, after I close the ticket if he begins to have problems, I have no problem re-opening it and taking care of it.

Thanks, Matt
