So now I'm curious what does the test do (what function does it serve) for the cable company?
it does exactly as it sounds..tracks noise...say there is noise on the line, when techs think they fixed it they can tune to that channel to see if noise is gone. fixing = repairing damaged cables, disconnecting a noisy drop to a house, replacing taps, etc.
