wanger posted : I know there are posters here that can be helped via this forum. The OP's post sounded a bit irritated/cocky without looking further for information to help resolve the issue. You are correct, there are other means but if a person who did a tiny bit of google searching they would have found a lot of the information on these forums already stating such information. Didn't mean to be too hard on the OP. ;)

anon posted : Well i dont knwo what caused it, but looks like something made the signal weaker on my line. i ripped out the old down lead that's been in use for a good while and i got a 2db boost to signal, which it now seems to be happy. I guess the local feed got weaker somehow.

thanks for the help and pointers!

wanger posted : Could be a modem going bad or a line going bad. One or the other or both. I would swap out the modem and make sure all connections are tight. Then go from there... As for using a linux router and OS, Comcast only supports Win 2K and above and Mac 10.4 OS or above. Linux and other similar OS are the customer's responsibility since it is an "advanced" OS and Comcast doesn't have the ability to support a multitude of operating systems.

Ultimately, either purchase a SLM and learn how to use it or contact Comcast to have someone come out and troubleshoot the issue.

anon posted : This is becoming tiresome. Daily, several times an hour, the connection will drop. dometimes its noticeable only as a bit of packet loss, but sometimes it happens long enough for the cablemodem to loose lock with the headend and reset everything.

I called tech support, only to find that because i run a linux router and not a piece of branded hardware, that the techs cant really help me. Ive tried explaining that ths issues appear between the cablemodem and the network, but they are having none of it.
