Is my Zyxel-660 Fried?

I'll be surfing the net for awhile, then all of the sudden I can't get to webpages. Simple things like Google, CNN, etc.

I power down my Zyxel then power back up and I can surf again.

I also have to do this every few days b/c the net will start to run very slowly and after a power down it runs as normal.

One other quirky thing is that if I power down then power back up the modem, restart the router, etc, My Xbox Live can't connect. The Xbox shows a connection to the net, but I can't connect to Xbox Live. In oreder to reestablish the XBox live connection, I have to reset the modem with the reset button and then put it back into bridge mode.

Is my modem fried?

Do any of the lights on the modem go out when you can't browse? It sounds like you may have errors building up on your line, that eventually make browsing hard.

The "Unable to connect to live" thing sounds normal, if you're using bridge mode, as rebridging would fix it. a possible fix would be enabling UPnP on the modem instead of bridging it..

PM Embarq_Joey with your number and he can see if there are errors building on your line

hi what does errors building up mean exactly? I started talking to someone at embarq support who said the same thing -- that he could see lots of errors built up but then we got cut off and the next person I reached said she didn't see anything at all.

when i do speed tests at the embarq speed test link, i can't even get 4mbps much less 10 -- and i am having slower internet connecting, stalls, sluggish lags and overall slower browsing than my parents who only have 1.5mb and live several miles further out from the connector station in my little town & neighborhood.

another difference is they have xp while i have os x 10.4.11 in case that provides any other insight.

we both have the embarq 660 dsl modem (i am pretty sure).

again, why would the first guy say he saw lots of build up errors and the 2nd person didn't?

I am paying for something I'm not getting anywhere close to so I may as well downgrade back to 1.5 which is what I originally had and each time i've tried upgrading it's just hardly any better than the 1.5mb speed although upload seems to be pretty close to what it is supposed to be -- why would that be good but download be so dismal?

any help/tips/thoughts on how to fix all this appreciated

I've had that happen - where two support people say totally different things.

A support rep told me that sometimes newer people - or anyone when it's really busy - don't handle two and three things at once very well, and they may be talking to you and looking at someone else's stats. Happened to me not long ago. I called for something NOT related to my connection (it's fine) and the rep said my signals looked bad, gave me a ticket number and another phone number. I called the number and the next rep didn't understand because the line tested fine. That's when I got the explanation above. Who knows .......

Re: Is my Zyxel-660 Fried?

I had the same thing happen to me last week. All of a sudden, the internet slowed to a crawl. I turned off the modem... and nothing came up besides the power light. I called tech support and they concluded that it was the modem; I swapped out modems the next day and so far, it has been smooth sailing.
