| [BC] Disconnecting frequently and bad DNS. Help??!!
Hi there, I switched from shaw to telus over a year ago, the person I spoke to at the time was located in Vancouver, spoke english and was pleasant to chat to. They connected me, sent me a siements modem and it worked flawlessly for around 12 months. Then 3 months ago, the connection slowed down, suddenly google took 35 seconds to load while it 'looked up' the site - DNS issue to the best of my knowledge, the connection constantly screwed up and the modem needed frequent resetting. Since then I have moved house from Chilliwack to Vancouver, the problem stayed the same. And I managed to talk to someone from telus who didn't hang up on me (a small miracle given how many times I had to call Manila), and they sent me a 'new' siemens modem. I'm still having the same problem. The problem is consistent across two ubuntu computers, wired or wireless and a vista laptop with 'light' usage. I've called 7 times and each time they hang up on me if the call takes longer than 25 seconds to resolve my issue. I'm about to glue razor blades to my modem, take it into their office in burnaby and swing it by the cable into the face of the first person who isn't wearing a cheap suit! Can someone please tell me what to do about this before I default to the aforementioned 'plan B' and switch to shaw (which had good service, but made up the numbers on my bill, hence why I switched). |

| Try hard coding the DNS in your network connection, I have found the Siemens to be the problem for me.
By default Ubuntu retrieves the IP of the Siemens as DNS, instead go into the web interface and grab the 2 DNS server IPs from it and manually edit the settings on Ubuntu.
You'll need to do a quick search on the Ubuntu forums for how to have it keep the settings persistent, it likes to overwrite them, sorry I don't recall off hand what was involved but it is minor. |

@telus.net | Thanks for your reply. I went to the siemens router setup screen and under DNS servers, it says 'obtain automatically', and the two fields you mentioned were blank. Is there a way to find out what they should be? |

@telus.net | reply to AB Anon Nevermind, I found the DNS server addresses on the status page. I put them in and it seems way faster. I think this may well have solved the issue. Thanks so much for the assistance! |
