Why?

I wonder why besides ego would a company enter this market? With Linux already established as the de facto open source OS, is there really room and, more importantly, opportunity for Google's entry?

Seems a waste of talented resources' time to me. But, I will accept that I am clearly missing something.

Yeah you are. Linux in its distributed forum is a tinkertoy set for techies. It has every bell and whistle imaginable, in 17 flavors. It is confusing as hell for the average consumer.

This OS happens to use the Linux kernel inside, but it will look nothing like Linux. It'll look like you put the Chrome browser on top of an appliance. Linux is just the platform, not the externally visible OS.

Linux isn't hugely popular or widely used, so they're just probably trying to rebrand it. Large conglomerates do that all the time. I'm sure they're hoping they're far more successful and regular users will accept it as an alternative platform. I on the other hand see failure. There's enough compatibility issues with most softwares and Linux.

You don't get it. This is not Linux. This is a platform for Chrome.

To extend their advertising and grow profits. It's been a long time coming for Google.

You people just do not get it.

Last time:

This is NOT LINUX.

This is a platform for Web apps based on Chrome and Google Gears, that happens to use the Linux kernel.

Especially for hard core gamers. This OS goes nowhere. At least for quite some time.

Running games is really a non issue. The hardware they are talking about (netbooks) is not robust enough to really run games anyway.

Linux is not at all unusual for use in embedded systems. TiVo run on a Linux kernel, but as a TiVo user, you would never know that. Recently when I was flying, the crew rebooted the seat-back entertainment system; a very familiar Linux boot sequence appeared on the screens, complete with penguin.

There is no "rebranding" to it because Linux isn't "branded" in the first place. Linux is just the kernel, nothing else. The name itself is trademarked but the kernel is completely free and open-source and licensed under the GPL. This means that whatever Google does, they have to release the source code back to the community.

No, you are the one who doesn't get it. This is in fact Linux. Linux is a kernel and this "Chrome OS" will run on the Linux kernel. This means Chrome = Linux.

For additions/modifications to the kernel and other GPL'd software that is correct. I don't believe that to be correct for software that Google develops not utilizing GPL code.

As much as I don't usually get into this (the whole linux isn't a valid desktop canard) , you're dead wrong here.

Linux has its on massive collection of games, emulators and can run most (about 70-80%) of windows games on Wine.
