News used to be something that wasn't driven so much by profit. The networks provided it as a "obligation" to their viewers. Since cable "news" has become popular, "news" is now thought of as a profit machine. Thus, good reporting dies and is replaced by popular "reporting". Fox made a mint off this, though they don't really report, but regurgitate other sources and discuss and spin it in a way that appeals to their wacko viewers.
