| Lifters ticking after oil change
2006 F150 with about 22,000 miles on it.
I changed the oil last night and when I started it, the lifter (both sides) started to make a ticking sound. I read that this was probably caused by air in the passages and would work itself out. Sound right? The same weight oil was used and the correct amount of oil was replaced. |

1 edit | What oil filter was used?
Also there is a TSB for some 2006 engines.
quote: Some vehicles equipped with 4.6L, 5.4L, and 6.8L 3-valve engines built between 1/11/2006 and 2/14/2006 may exhibit a loud ticking noise in the valve train area. This may be caused by a stuck/collapsed lash adjuster.

| I changed from a Pure One Purolator to a NAPA Gold (Wix) filter.
I suppose my next step should be to be sure they sold me the correct filter (there was no book out front so I needed to rely on them to tell me... something I don't normally do). |

| What engine and what is the build date?
More info:

* LOUD TICKING NOISE - 3-VALVE ENGINES - STUCK LASH ADJUSTER
Publication Date: May 1, 2006
FORD: 2006 Mustang, Expedition, Explorer, F-150, F-250, F-350 LINCOLN: 2006 Mark LT, Navigator MERCURY: 2006 Mountaineer
ISSUE: Some vehicles equipped with 4.6L, 5.4L, and 6.8L 3-valve engines built between 1/11/2006 and 2/14/2006 may exhibit a loud ticking noise in the valve train area. This may be caused by a stuck/collapsed lash adjuster.
ACTION: Verify engine build date, isolate, and replace any stuck/collapsed lash adjuster by following the Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Check date code on the engine, located on the engine timing cover. 1. Date code between 1/11/2006 and 2/14/2006, proceed to Step 2. 2. Date code NOT between 1/11/2006 and 2/14/2006, this TSB does not apply, perform normal diagnostics. 2. Isolate the source of the noise to the cam cover on either Bank 1 or Bank 2. If the noise is not isolated to either cam cover, this TSB does not apply. Follow normal Workshop Manual (WSM) procedures for additional diagnostics.

| That's a tough one to locate. I know I'm looking at the front of the engine, around the pulley area for the cover but I just can't get in there enough to see a date.
I checked the filter type and it's correct for the truck.
I'm still thinking it has something to do with the oil change as it just started right when I changed the oil. |

Of course it would happen after a oil change as that is when the lifter/tappet is not being fed oil pressure and during start up can collapse if it has a defect. The only way around something like that is after changing the oil, prime the oil pump to pressurize the oil system/lifters before cranking the engine over. That isn't something easy to do as most engines have the oil pump being turned by the engines rotation preventing the pump from being rotated separately. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |
