[AB] Slow Telus Internet

For years I've been using Telus internet with no problems. However, i realize today I'm on whichever plan is the plan with 1.5 - 6.0 MBPS. I have never had more than 1.3 Mb/s down. I feel like this speed is much too slow. I am using an old D-Link DSL-300I router that Telus gave me years ago. Is there any simple way for me to speed up my Telus internet?!

Call in. The range for regular High Speed of 1.5Mbps to 6Mbps is a new thing - it used to be individual tiers for 1.5, 3 and 6Mbps.

Existing users aren't automatically in most cases upgraded to the maximum potential speed. So if you signed up for 1.5, you'll still be at 1.5. Call in and ask if your line can handle 3 or 6Mbps (or 15Mbps, which is more expensive but may be available), and while you're at it, try to get a new modem

Wow, thank you. I had no idea that's how the old plan worked.
If I were to purchase a new modem, would I be able to get one from anywhere and it be guaranteed to work with my configuration? Or do I have to get one from Telus?

You can purchase a new modem third party and use it with TELUS - if you are comfortable changing some of the modem's configuration - and TELUS will not support any modem they do not issue.

I would ask for a new modem first from TELUS (who knows, they might give you one), then try to find a used TELUS modem on Craigslist or something. The Thomson Speedtouch 516s are great and ubiquitous. I'd imagine the most common used ones out there are 2Wire gateways (wireless built in) - they are very decent as well.
