| Comodo Secure DNS, OpenDNS, regular DNS, etc.
I just installed Comodo and noticed it offered me to use their Comodo Secure DNS service. I've never heard of it, but thought it was interesting. I've heard of OpenDNS. I normally just use my ISP's designated DNS, but I'm wondering what the upside is to using something like Comodo's DNS or OpenDNS. Is there any pros to using it? Anyone have experiencing using either of those? Any other similar services out there? |

00000 | I have used OpenDNS for a few years. Works great. You can find it's benefits on their website. I have been thinking about trying Comodo. Maybe next time I update my router. |

What's wrong with DNS service provided by your ISP?
It's usually the fastest way to resolve domain names. And, BTW, there is no point to use a secure DNS, especially if it's your ISP provided service.

| I prefer 4.2.2.1 to my ISP's DNS servers. The other Level 3 public DNS servers are terrible recently but 4.2.2.1 is better than my ISP in reliability according to DNS BenchMark. My ISP's DNS servers were dropping packets like crazy this afternoon as were the other Level 3 servers but the one I use was doing great. My ISP's servers were showing 35-50% reliability as were the other Level 3 ones and Open DNS. The only really good server this afternoon was 4.2.2.1 with 100% reliability and faster than one of my ISP's servers and almost as fast as the other two.
For days now, I have not been able to do this command:
nslookup -querytype=all personal.avira-update.com
I would get unknown error with both my ISP's DNS servers (3 servers) and with Level 3 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.6. Tonight, 4.2.2.1 finally was able to resolve that and give me a list of all Avira IPv4 and IPv6 free version server addresses. My ISP's DNS servers still return the unknown error.
Anyone wanting to investigate their DNS servers or maybe change to another server should download DNS BenchMark. It is still in beta but close to being finished finally and runs fine.

| The current version has sounds and some find that quite irritating. Others like the sounds. I didn't know this latest version has sounds because unless I am listening to music, I keep my speakers off. I just read about the sounds in GRC's newsgroups. In future versions, you will be able to turn the sounds off.
There is not much information at grc.com or in the program itself about how it works yet. There is lots of information though at news.grc.com in the grc.dns newsgroup where all the beta testers are gathered.
