[Exchange] Exchange won't send/receive but no errors!

I'm hoping someone here can help me as I'm pulling my hair out and going insane.

This morning a customer called with an issue accessing public folders form their Outlook to their Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 / Exchange 2003 server. Everything else seemed fine, except this. I logged into the server and there were all sorts of random event logs. After a few hours I thought I had everything sorted out, they could access public folders... but then we discovered they couldn't email anyone! Both internally and externally! Users can't even mail themselves. No bounce, error or anything... just no mail!

They also pop their mails using the SBS POP3 connector and that's not working correctly either.

All necessary services seem to be okay.

There are NO error in event log, everything looks clean!

This server's been running fine for years and randomly today it gave issues... can anyone suggest where to start looking, my brain is fried from an entire day at this problem and little to no sleep.

1) Have you tried telneting your mail server?

Check this out.

2) troubleshoot layer 1, cabling? can you ping it internally and externally?

3) is the server on wrong vlan?

4) switch problem?

5) firewall access rules?

6) dns resolved?

Let's try this and post your result. I am so sure if you see some anomaly.

I can telnet into the local SMTP server.

I can ping everything fine, local server, local workstations, external ISP SMTP server.

This is an Exchange or Windows Server 2003 issue, not external of the server itself.

3) is the server on wrong vlan?
I don't believe so, no.

4) switch problem?
Since everything else is working fine, web, DNS, etc. I don't believe so. I can even send/receive from a portable mail client to an external mail server.

5) firewall access rules?
No firewall and I can communicate 'out'.

6) dns resolved?
Perfectly, yes.

Fixed the problem by reinstalling Exchange. All emails send to them over the last 24 hours or so were lost, and they're upset, but what can ya do...
