unions

Thats what you get for having a workforce that doesn't get to steal legally (Unions). If Comcast was unionized, none of its techs would ever need to worry about robbing to survive, they do it by clocking in each day for overtime shifts. They would be paid too much and they can't give up those fat pensions.

Don't forget clocking in starting at the age of 12 months.

Troll much? If you hate unions so much, move to the deep South where we have wonderful right-to-work laws and very few unions.
Be prepared for your income to be cut in half, though. Wages down here aren't quite up to New York standards....

Wages aren't nearly as high because the cost of living is so low. A 2000 sq foot house 30 minutes outside the city on over an acre goes appraises for 150k and many have been selling in the 110s (like my next door neighbor). Good luck finding something like this in NYC.

Wouldn't it make sense that he would make *more* money if he was unionized? Hence he wouldn't feel compelled to rob a check cashing store?

I think if Comcast were unionized things would be even worse. Then they probably would be barred from immediately firing employees like the one who's the subject of this post. He would just go to his union rep and they would likely fight it for him.

After all, criminals have cable TV in jail... Who better than a former Comcast employee inmate to provide service there? It's Comcastic!

It took Abraham Lincoln to free the slaves. And it's taking Barack Obama to enslave the free.

Everyone should be worried that 75 per cent of our GDP is consumer spending; in fact, I would argue it affects national security. It's a sign of just how much industrial capacity politicians have allowed to be moved overseas. It's taken a while but for the past 2-3 decades national-level politicians (Congress and Executive Branch) have allowed multi-national companies to move most higher-paying blue collar jobs in the US abroad. It started insidiously enough with legislation allowing the slow erosion of tariffs based on the percentage of the product produced overseas. The motive--cheaper wages. The funny thing is many of these multi-national companies are headquartered in Europe, which hasn't been as open to Asian and third-world trade, hence they've not lost as many jobs (the shift in jobs in the western EU is to eastern members of the EU). White collar workers and government employees shouldn't be too complacent--their jobs and wages are at risk, too. The shrinking job market in this country may never recover. We're clearly going to continue to see an increase in the percentage of working poor in this country. At some point, federal wages will have to begin shrinking--the median federal salary far exceeds the national average (the last time I checked, the median wage was at the GS-13 level or about $78,000--granted, there are federal employees that make a lot less, but there are many who make a lot more to tip the median that high). Our shrinking tax base cannot keep supporting high federal spending.

In this day and time, unions are out-dated. Back when there was no Internet, and average Joe the worker couldn't compare his salary or work conditions to the entire area/country/world; companies would bank on that his lack of info would mean he would never ask/argue for a pay raise.

Times have changed and while not all unions are evil, most just seem like a blank hole of cash with no real protection. If the boss wants to get you fired, he will. There are just as many loopholes in union contracts as exist for employee work contracts, etc. Scheduled pay raises also mean there is no market for a pay raise within that company. You get the same raise no matter if you do a good job or a crappy job just like your co-worker. All that matters is time. It's as bad as farming in a MMORPG to gain a high level character where time determines the power instead of experience.
