Great was just filling out the opt-out email, and they want my cable modem mac address ... which is buried behind my desk.
Not sure what kind of cable modem you have but you might be able to find the MAC address from it's web interface (if it has one):

Good call .... didn't even think of that. I was trying through my routers interface, but forgot the password I had assigned (I knew I shouldn't have changed it from admin LOL)

I *am* paying Comcast directly to provide working, standards-compliant DNS services.
Indeed. It seems like people are experiencing severe outages due to this error where the service has been rolled-out. It takes two days for the opt-out to be processed. Altogether, my business is down for two days, and now two more days. I am starting to smell a class-action suit for deceptive trade practices (changing the service to non-standards-compliant DNS is a good start) if the problem is indeed traced to this issue. So far, it's looking like this is the issue.

Thanks Comcast

I just spent an hour and a half searching, running Hijack This, uninstalling Firefox, deleted all Firefox folders including hidden ones. I even considered editing the registry. I essentially removed all my saved passwords, form information, bookmarks, and other stuff just to find out that it is YOU who has hijacked my browser and not some nefarious website.

Thanks, and you are squatting on all of the unregistered sites.

New Servers Noted in SE Michigan

I have no need to opt-out as I've never used Comcast DNS. But I'm the curious sort... and just this morning find new DNS servers via DHCP:

WAS:
68.87.77.130 cns.westlandrdc.mi.michigan.comcast.net
68.87.72.130 chic-cns.area4.il.chicago.comcast.net
68.87.75.194 cns.summitpark.pa.pitt.comcast.net

NOW:
68.87.77.134 nrcns.westlandrdc.mi.michigan.comcast.net
68.87.72.134 nrcns.area4.il.chicago.comcast.net

But no redirection yet. It's consistent with the progress stated publicly. While I abhor elimination of NXDOMAIN I applaud Comcast being open about it. (Earthlink was NOT! )

EDIT: If anyone in the know is listening, the performance of cached lookups on the new servers is twice as fast as the old. Are they really faster or did I just catch it before all the customer DHCP cycles?

Also... any insight what "nr" means? I'm chuckling at some guesses.

North Region? Nether Regions? Not Ready? No Returns?

Its a little less sophisticated than those guesses.

"nr" = No Redirect

Isn't that backwards? The original post says these new servers (now named "nrcns") will be the redirecting servers, right? Or will the name also change when it becomes redirecting?

Incidentally, the new and old servers are now performing neck-in-neck identical. The new ones were MUCH faster yesterday so I'll bet customer volume is switching over as we speak. (psssst... the old ones may end up seriously outperforming the new ones... I hope ).

Was wondering if someone would notice this

We deployed the DNS views before we decided which ones would be no redirect. If you look now its been corrected.

Re: [DNS] Comcast Launches Trial of Domain Helper Service

We have started to roll out this service to the rest of the country today and we wanted to give folks an FYI in case they wanted to opt-out or wanted to learn more about what we were doing:

You can opt-out here:

»dns-opt-out.comcast.net

If you would like to read about this in an updated blog post:

We have also added a page to our network management site that goes into detail about how the redirect service works and what types of filtering we are using:

»networkmanagement.comcast.net/Do···ogic.htm

We are also now listing a full list of IP addresses for our DNS caching servers opt-in/out to use for statically assigning them as needed:

»dns.comcast.net/dns-ip-addresses.html

The list of IP addresses needs to be sorted by area.

I'm trying to opt out again. Mine never changed. I'm hoping I just put the wrong MAC address the first time. I checked it carefully this time.

If you PM me your information I can help you to opt out.

Thanks

Bingo! I have to mention "nr" = "no redirect" was the obvious answer BUT BACKWARDS! Naw. Couldn't be it... Until now.

Re: [DNS] Comcast Launches Trial of Domain Helper Service

Just ran into this myself tonight. Pleased to see that Comcast is being up front in communicating what is happening (even if I don't think it's a good thing to be doing - my browser already handles redirecting to my preferred search engine).

However, when looking into this, the first reference I found was this at Comcast's site:

which incorrectly indicates that this is caused by the Comcast Toolbar (which I don't have installed). Updating the FAQ with the new info in this thread would be helpful.

Why can't this kind of thing be an opt-IN service?

Apparently this just hit slashdot:

People there are tending to not like this.
