[Vista] vista client cannot see 2008 server

i have a vista sp2 ultimate client connected to a domain controller. everything works fine - file sharing, printer sharing, active directory, DNS, DHCP, etc.

the issue is on the vista box, when i go to network, it does not list my server 2008. it just doesn't show up. i can type \\server and it will show up with shares, printers, etc. but this is the only way to see server resources.

normally i wouldn't care, but i have been trying to get vista backup to work. and i can back up files to the network, but the network window does not allow unc path names, it only allows browsing through explorer - which does not show the server.

firewall on vista client off. network discovery enabled. no funny system events. mapped drives, shared network resources such as fileshares and printers working fine.

any ideas?
