Telus Hd tv plus Internet speed

Just curious really. If i get Telus tv and internet. What happens to my internet speed if I'm watching an HD channel, how much is it affected?

Thanks!

Heh, dude, you've been around this place long enough to know the answer to that question ...lol

The thing is "now" you can get a second service for TTV (if you want the turbo for internet) that won't affect your internet speed, or opt for Telus Satellite TV, which in my opinion has better picture quality...

Your internet speed isn't affected when you're on an HD profile. You can watch an HD channel on one box and an SD channel on the other box and still get the full internet 3.0 speeds.

TTV customers only get 3.0 speeds regardless of if they are HD or SD. If you want more speed you would have to add a dark DSL line if your building can support it.

Some folks have had internet speeds affected by having a SD & HD stream running (especially if their connection is less than pristine). Lots of posts relating to 15.0 Turbo running around 10.0 on this forum.

I have heard some folks swear that by turning off one, or both STBs helps with net connection speeds. That shouldn't be required, but there it is.

Have tech support check a few things out.

To paraphrase what I have been told, HSE = 3.0, SD = 3.0, and HD = 7.0 - totals up to 13.0 of 15.0 connection. If that connection were Turbo and the client was getting under 13.0, he'd be in trouble with HDTV.

Not all connections are perfect, or equal. Get it checked out.

Good luck.

The qualification for Turbo is not the same qualification for TTV HD.

You must be able to sync at 15 Mbps in order to get TTV HD. If you can't get 15 Mbps your connection won't sync and won't qualify.

Turbo is 10 Mbps - 15 Mbps.

Well, I have Turbo now, but Telus offered me a really good deal on their 3 pack combo. Phone, internet and TV. Couldn't turn it down.
So of course I'm going to be getting HD, but I hear that if you use the HD you can only get 6.0 on your internet. The guy selling it to me of course said that I could keep my Turbo plan, not that I believed him. I've heard that 6.0 is max.

The other thing I was curious about was, if I'm playing some Xbox online and I have my tv settop box turned on, will that make me lag at all because the signal is still coming through?

If I want to keep my Turbo, are you saying they can install a second line?

Thanks guys! It's just that it was such a good deal I couldn't say no, however, I do game quite a bit and I'm concerned with having to turn off the box everytime I want to shoot someone in the face..... wait, did that come out wrong?

Yes, you can add a second line for Turbo and get 15mbps.

pretty sure that DSL maxes out at 3.0 if you have DSL and TTV HD on the same loop.

That being said, as some have suggested you can run a 2nd Dark loop for the Turbo, however you will still have to pay for your DSL service attached your your primary TTV loop. So to make it as cheap as possible you can drop your primary DSL line to lite service. Am I wrong on this anyone?

You can have phone and TV on one clearance, and internet on the other. You're not required to have internet with TV.

Well, when I do a speedtest on my Turbo plan I get 13000 down and 860 up.
So if i'm reading this right, and HD uses 7 down, I should be getting somewhere around 6.0 down?

Does having that much bandwidth being used (the 7meg for HD) affect my ping times on games? What I mean is, lets say the girlfriend is watching Hd and I'm gaming, will I lag?

Also, last question, how is HD on Telus? Is it pretty clear? I noticed on my Shaw HD whenever I get fast moving objects, especially if they are red for some reason, that I get some artifacting happening on my screen. And I know it's not the tv as it's pretty new and doesn't do that on any other HD sources. And they are all on HDMI ports so that's not it either.

Anyway, thanks folks!

if you do what they're saying you'd have turbo on a second line... the ttv would not affect it..

option 1-
line 1:
phone and ttv (without adsl)

line 2: dark turbo (you'd have to pay to have a jack installed or reconfigured)

option 2-
line 1: phone and turbo + SAT TTV... (which doesn't affect the internet either)

What's all involved with getting ttv on a second line? Is there an extra fee for this? Do they need to hardwire something in?

Most houses are wired for two lines. What the Telus tech will do is pick one pair and dedicate it to the Telus TV modem and most likely phone line. He was use a pots splitter to isolate the TV from the phone service. Phone service to entire house. TV to only modem jack. The tech will than use the second pair of wires for the second Dry dsl line... Which will be dedicated to only 1 phone jack.

It's a routine install for them. Nothing special. Plan on it taking anywhere from 3 to 5 hours to get it all done and working.

When I did mine the first time around years ago there was no charge for it. When I moved about 4 months ago there was no charge again for the install. Not sure if the reps were just being nice or what.

Regards,

Joshb
