[WIN7] Windows 7 upgrade last day. Should I upgrade?

Hi, I'm currently running XP Home SP3 OEM and I'm very comfortable with my setup and security. I'm currently running as admin (because of problems) but if I used 7 I would use LUA. I'm considering the upgrade deal to 7 Premium but I'm a bit hesitant.

I'm running a Q6600 Quad core overclocked to 3GH with 4GB of RAM. My graphics card is a GeForce 8500GT and the Windows 7 advisor says I'm good to go.

1. What advantages would I get from 7?
2. Could I run the games I have been running on XP?
3. Should I stay with XP and wait for the next OS since updates are good until 2014?
4. Can I run a VM while using Windows 7?

Any other thoughts, opinions or other things I should consider are welcomed and encouraged.

Thank you!

Hi,

Go for it. You can always dual boot. Put a second hard drive in your system or make another partition.

I'd say if you're happy with XP and you can see no dire reason to upgrade to Windows 7, (does it really offer you anything you can't live without?) then just stick with XP. I'm sticking with XP64 myself.

Why break things that work well for you now? Is there any particular reason?

I'd stay with your option #3.

My question is will Amazon let you cancel if Microsoft happens to announce a better promotion vbefore it ships?

I would hope so. I know Costco will since I cancelled one version and ordered another. They told me I could cancel right up to the day it ships.

I am sure Amazon will let you cancel before shipment, but their 30 day price guarantee was discontinued on September 1, 2008.

I also pre-ordered Win7 though Amazon and they stated as I was ordering that if the price drops between now and the day they ship it to me, I will automatically get the lower price.

That is great, and I am happy since I too pre-ordered a couple of copies at Amazon (which I will be selling on Ebay next year to help cover the cost of a TechNet subscription). But as Howie alluded to, it's like saying if it snows in Miami Florida on the 4th of July, you get it for half price.

From what I have seen, Win 7 is like XP on steroids. Nearly everyone who has evaluated it gives it four stars, and most were "drooling" over the Betas that seemed rock solid. I also of the opinion that Microsoft believes it has made a pretty good operating system, addressed what bugged Vista users and is giving everyone a chance to get onboard for a reasonable cost.
Too, I am betting that MS will drop support for XP as soon as possible, and while I am sure many XP users will say they don't care, it's too risky for most people to have a systems subject to exploits by hackers.

Amazon did away with their price matching guarantee a couple months ago. Just letting you know so you don't count on it in the future.

The only price protection they offer now is if you pre-order an item and Amazon lowers their own price before they're able to ship it. Then, you get the lower price.

Yes....for the price, why not.

Personally, I love XP too.
I have XP Pro on two machines, and Vista on two others. (One Vista Ultimate, and one Vista Home Premium).
For that matter, I like Vista as well.

But hey, I still ordered Windows 7 while the "special deal" was offered.....lets keep up with the times folks.

You can always decide you don't want it later on.
Of course, by that time, we'll probably be wondering if it's worth an upgrade to Windows 8 (Or Windows Future, or Windows Star Trek....what ever they decide to call it).

Oops...is the deal already over at the time of my post?
If so, stick with XP.

Here is a concept video of what Windows 8 may look like:

Copenhagen User Experience from Copenhagen Concept on Vimeo.

[EDIT] I'd upgrade as you can always sell it for more than you paid. Microsoft WILL NOT offer any special offers on Windows 7 upgrades after today.

Thank you all for your replies and support! I appreciate every one because they gave me more to think about.

Also thanks goes to jabarnut for your humor as I needed a laugh. And thanks to howie for the links for the possible sneak peek at Windows 8.

I think I'm going to go flip a coin but if I buy the upgrade I could always sell it. That would give me plenty of time to decide before it ships.

Also, why in the world are we still using a mouse rather than talking to these new operating systems?

Thanks once again to you all .

Re: [WIN7] Windows 7 upgrade last day. Should I upgrade?

You're welcome.

One thing you can be sure of is that MS is not like Ashampoo and will not have any more "special offers" like this before (or after) this thing goes RTM. You can bet a retail upgrade license for Home Premium is going to go for $90-$100 or more when it becomes available at your favorite B&M or online store. This offer is a no-brainer, IMHO.

Well what I'd be looking out for is an update to "The Ultimate Steal" product line. Right now you can get Vista Ultimate upgrade for $64.95 if you have an .edu email address.

But who knows if/when Microsoft will update the offerings to Windows 7 and Office 14. I doubt before 2010.

Will you be able to clean install a W7 upgrade version like you could with Vista upgrade disks?

Does W7 home premium include both disks---32 & 64 bit?

I already have Ultimate x64 installed, but I prefer a clean install of a new OS.

Edit: The offer is now dead. Found answers to my questions and decided to pass on the $50 upgrade deal. I'll stay with Vista for a while.

I ordered my upgrade directly from Microsoft, and they told me that you can do a clean install. Home Premium does come in either 32 or 64 bit....I do not believe you get both though....You have to select one of them.

If you ordered the physical media, you'll get both and I'm sure you can download both as well, if you chose the download only (or download/ship).

Yeah, unlike Vista where only Ultimate included both platforms, Windows 7 provides both in all editions (except Starter).

I did the preorder about 2 weeks ago at around $50....I believed that I had to choose 64 bit at that price for my system, but I could be wrong.

For good or bad I justified the upgrade purchase by believing that if Win7 does become a big hit, software and hardware vendors may finally leave behind XP to concentrate their attention on the latest OS.

However, I do have XP "dialed in" and running well on several computers around the house.

Maybe it is just time to learn something else, too.

At this moment I'm sticking with WIN XP Pro but might upgrade to 64 biit version as i'm doing a new build with a AMD Phenom x4 with DDR3 memory(6 GB in 3 modules) and will need the 64 bit version to access all that memory.
Any feed back on anyone running 64 bit versions of WIN Xp and any difficulties with it?
I have a lot of old digital pictures on my old pc.Would I run into problems moving them over to 64 bit system?

I run XP64 on my rig and I've got 8.0GB Dual Channel PC2-6400 RAM. I have had little issues with XP64 compared to Vista Ultimate x64. You will probably have to search a bit more for 64-bit drivers, but my motherboard manufacturer had all the XP64 drivers I needed just in case. I found XP64 had most generic drivers for things like ethernet and sound. There are lots of drivers out there for XP64. ATi are still producing up to date 64-bit Radeon Catalyst drivers for my video card.
I don't see you encountering any issues moving your digital pics over from XP32 to XP64? Just transfer them to a CD or USB-Key first so you have a backup.

My specs for my rig running XP64 is here: Dustyn See Profile

Look at it this way, you pay the $50 and eventually you'll get your package. If by then you've decided to upgrade, you've saved money. If you've decided not, you'll have *no* problem selling your unopened box and recoup your "investment". Or, if you're waffling still, stick the box on a shelf and wait a while.
Unless Win7 turns out to be a major nightmare and dies a sudden death, you almost can't lose.

Keep in mind its not a "deal" you are getting. Its just a random promotion MS is putting out right now early.

On release day you can expect same such items. OEM version of WIn 7 will be VERY cheap so its not something you need to rush out right now.

The way that Win7 handles memory is light years ahead of XP and/or Vista, especially if you use the 64 bit capability of your processor (which will see and use all 4GB of your memory).

If you have a spare hard drive laying around, install 7 on it (after unplugging your main/WinXP drive) and experiment.

I don't think anyone has to worry about any price drop on Windows 7 upgrades... this offer is done, fin, finito!

Nice to know you would get the lower price, though...

[EDIT] The next good deal on Windows 7 will be the "system builders" OEM full versions available from places like Newegg, where you can expect to save about 50%, compared to the same retail full versions.
Oh yeah, then there are the offers from online software dealers in Eastern Europe such as "Vladimir's Software" where they ship in 8-10 weeks Those don't count...

why get another OS from microsoft? they have a long history of releasing incomplete garbage that takes them on average 5 years and 3 service packs to fix.

with the 3rd service pack for XP, that puts the OS to what it should have been when it was released. now the OS is at its end of life for major support.

vista is junk, and it will be junk until they put out 2 more updated service packs. i just do not understand why they released another OS. a complete waste of time and money in my opinion.

If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications.

I would think you would be fine with XP for at least five more years so time is not an issue, you don't need Win7. If I used windows I would wait, I'm a Linux user so doesn't matter either way to me.

You could have been beta testing Win7 on your setup, so you would know exactly how the OS and your system gets along.

Again I would wait no rush MS will make enough of them never heard of MS running out of copies. So just enjoy your setup read about other people's failure or success with Win7.

If you are happy with Windows XP/SP3, I would not worry about it especially if you're not Techy and can't work on your own computer. With major upgrades like this it's a good time to build a new computer, then you can load and try to run all your favorite Programs. Once you get all the bugs worked out then you can swap the CPU's and go live!

For the majority of the people, they should wait and buy a computer with Windows 7 loaded. If you are going to upgrade, then I would recommend a new HDD.

Maybe. But every time Microsoft comes out with a new OS like ..ummmm... Windows ME, or Vista, the youngsters want to know "how soon can I get it? What do I need to run it?"

The oldsters who forgot where their glasses are nevertheless have the presence of mind to ask, "why should I get it? What does it do better that I actually need?"

Make no mistake, I was an early adopter of Windows XP -- I even ran early betas and absolutely loved it. When it was finally released I deployed it everywhere!

I see no such value with Vista or Vista SP3 aka Win 7. But then, I can't find my glasses, either!
