you do realize that the upgrade will only upgrade vista, and up, not xp right, you read the fine print? had a preorder through the beta for 45$, but it is only the upgrade and will only upgrade if you have vista. If i'm not mistaken
from the ms store:
Running earlier versions?
If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications.

I would think you would be fine with XP for at least five more years so time is not an issue, you don't need Win7. If I used windows I would wait, I'm a Linux user so doesn't matter either way to me.

You could have been beta testing Win7 on your setup, so you would know exactly how the OS and your system gets along.

Again I would wait no rush MS will make enough of them never heard of MS running out of copies. So just enjoy your setup read about other people's failure or success with Win7.

If you are happy with Windows XP/SP3, I would not worry about it especially if you're not Techy and can't work on your own computer. With major upgrades like this it's a good time to build a new computer, then you can load and try to run all your favorite Programs. Once you get all the bugs worked out then you can swap the CPU's and go live!

For the majority of the people, they should wait and buy a computer with Windows 7 loaded. If you are going to upgrade, then I would recommend a new HDD.

Christ, thanks for reminding me why I didn't buy this upgrade!

Seriously, I thought about it, but I really only have one computer that could easily run it, and that's my son's gaming computer. All the rest are happily on XP and will stay that way. The gaming computer (running XP) has lots and lots of applications installed and loads of special drivers which I slipstreamed when doing the initial XP install. Is it really worth the hassle of going to Win 7 and having lots of stuff break? I concluded no.

As far as I'm concerned Win 7 is just a version of Vista that works, and suffers from the same [lack of] value proposition relative to XP. If we run into a roadblock sometime down the road where Win 7 becomes a mandatory platform for gaming, or we build our computer again instead of buying one that would come with Win 7, the worst that will happen IF that ever happens is I'll pay twice as much for the upgrade.

I ordered from Amazon and while I don't know if Amazon will let me cancel my order, their price guarantee will give me the lower price (if Microsoft comes out with a better deal) before my upgrades ships.
Amazon did away with their price matching guarantee a couple months ago. Just letting you know so you don't count on it in the future.

The only price protection they offer now is if you pre-order an item and Amazon lowers their own price before they're able to ship it. Then, you get the lower price.

I have to agree with you Wolfie00.I would like to just upgrade to WIN XP PRO 64 bit version but I may hold off on even that.
Bill Gates loves to make you pay and pay for updated versions of the same OS with a lot of stuff thats been fixed from the VISTA OS and not a lot really new that is usable for most of us.
Its like they want to emulate MAC OS's.Looking pretty doesn't matter to me.
I have limited funds at the moment .I'm on a fixed income(SSI Disability)and it takes time to gather money for new build and new OS.
I won't upgrade until I "have" to.

I doubt Bill Gates even cares these days...he has other interests that are much more important to him now.

Steve Ballmer on the other hand, may care...really hard to tell with that guy.

I still get a kick out of how the ol' "greedy Bill Gates" is still to blame for everything though.....he's probably over in Africa somewhere about now, and doesn't even have a Laptop at his disposal.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has done some truly amazing things.

(Ok, sorry folks, back on topic)

Funny you have no problem using Windows though.
Make a statement!
Stop using any Microsoft products at all!

That will show him, by golly!!!

Once again folks, I'm done now...this time I promise.

Its nice to have the money to keep up with these trends.
And I've been doing that for 15 years now.DOS (who knows how many vers.)Windows from way back.
If I had a lot of time to waste I'd go to Linux and educate myself on that.(I have tried a few versions)But theres a new learning curve with that and from doing Windows so long it seems counter- intuitive.
I don't like being a lemming and following everyone else.
Come on IBM and OS-2 !!!

At this moment I'm sticking with WIN XP Pro but might upgrade to 64 biit version as i'm doing a new build with a AMD Phenom x4 with DDR3 memory(6 GB in 3 modules) and will need the 64 bit version to access all that memory.
Any feed back on anyone running 64 bit versions of WIN Xp and any difficulties with it?
I have a lot of old digital pictures on my old pc.Would I run into problems moving them over to 64 bit system?
I run XP64 on my rig and I've got 8.0GB Dual Channel PC2-6400 RAM. I have had little issues with XP64 compared to Vista Ultimate x64. You will probably have to search a bit more for 64-bit drivers, but my motherboard manufacturer had all the XP64 drivers I needed just in case. I found XP64 had most generic drivers for things like ethernet and sound. There are lots of drivers out there for XP64. ATi are still producing up to date 64-bit Radeon Catalyst drivers for my video card.
I don't see you encountering any issues moving your digital pics over from XP32 to XP64? Just transfer them to a CD or USB-Key first so you have a backup.

My specs for my rig running XP64 is here: Dustyn See Profile

It may or may not be an issue for you, but iTunes does not work "out of the box" on XP64. You can make it work but it requires hacking.

IMHO, if you have a machine with so much ram that you need XP64, it will probably handle Vista or Windows 7 just fine. 64 bit is just better supported on those OSes.

Thanks for the input guys.I'm just hard headed and set in my ways.
That happens when you get old.
Pretty soon i'll be looking for my glasses and wondering where i put them and they have been pushed up unto my head but I can't find em.
Getting old is a bitch.

Maybe. But every time Microsoft comes out with a new OS like ..ummmm... Windows ME, or Vista, the youngsters want to know "how soon can I get it? What do I need to run it?"

The oldsters who forgot where their glasses are nevertheless have the presence of mind to ask, "why should I get it? What does it do better that I actually need?"

Make no mistake, I was an early adopter of Windows XP -- I even ran early betas and absolutely loved it. When it was finally released I deployed it everywhere!

I see no such value with Vista or Vista SP3 aka Win 7. But then, I can't find my glasses, either!

A system builders OS is another name for "OEM". The discs operating system will be tied to your computers hardware. Not that big a deal to me. You do not need to have XP32 installed before upgrading to XP64. I'm not even sure if that is a valid way of upgrading? A clean install is the best way to install XP64... if it's not the only way. Also keep in mind that the LATEST Service Pack for Windows XP 64-bit Edition is Service Pack 2. It may also very well be the very last Service Pack for XP64. There is no SP3 for XP64. See if you can find copy of XP64 with SP2 included... that way you don't have to download and install it after the install.
NOTE: There are discs that offer SP2A, SP2B, SP2C... They are no different than SP2. They just contain additional product activation keys.

I believe the only issues you might encounter as others have mentioned here are primarily... 64-bit hardware device drivers or certain applications that just don't run properly without some hack like Apple ITunes. I wouldn't know or care as I don't use any Apple products. Also, software applications that run on Vista64/Windows 7 x64... may or may not run on XP64. Most applications will tell you specifically if it can run on XP64. But my XP64 rig is just chalk full of 64-bit applications that are designed for XP64. I don't need anything more!
