Dolan says no go for Epix movie channel

Saw a link to this on AVS (»www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre···806381):

July 9 (Bloomberg) -- Comcast Corp., the largest U.S. cable-television provider, and Cablevision Systems Corp. said they aren’t interested in carrying the new Epix premium movie channel.

“It’s a bad idea,” Stephen Burke, Comcast’s chief operating officer, said in an interview at the Allen & Co. media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho. “I haven’t heard of anyone that’s interested.” Consumers already have an adequate number of choices, he said.

Cablevision Chief Executive Officer James Dolan said in a separate interview at the conference that he’s “in perfect agreement” with Burke. Cablevision is the fifth-biggest U.S. provider of cable-TV service.

It depends on whether or not you like premium movie channels and the movies it will offer exclusively. I believe the original goal was to offer the channel on a digital package and not as a pay channel, but I think the situation is pretty fluid since hasn't launched.

3 studio's chose not to renew their respective deals with the current premium channels (Showtime, HBO, etc) in favor of launching their own.

"Epix is a premium television movie channel that is scheduled to launch in late 2009. The planned channel will be operated by Studio 3 Partners through a joint venture between Viacom, MGM and Lionsgate. Films featured will include recent releases from Viacom-owned Paramount Pictures and Paramount Vantage as well as titles from MGM and Lionsgate. Epix will also offer a companion video on demand service."

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epix_(TV_channel)

"The network will have rights to the studios’ films such as “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “Iron Man,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

Sounds like something I would not be at all interested in. Maybe we are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel in terms of everyone going out an creating their own niche channel and then demanding to stuff it down the throats of cable and satellite subscribers.

Except those moves that are on Epix will not be on HBO, Showtime, etc.

It never ceases to amaze me how gready people are. They just added 30 channels three weeks ago.

When people are looking for entire digital cable lineups to go HD, looking for HD only channels that haven't been added yet or looking to add channels they want/prefer...it's not so much about greed as it is about preferred choices.

Most of the movies are crap anyway, no matter what station they are on.

Shit.. I hope this channel doesn't jeopardize me being able to watch the same 20 year old movies on HBO, Starz and Encore for the 500th time.. That would be tragic.

That's why you should just have basic cable and a usenet subscription. Usenet is only $8/month now with Astraweb, and you can watch every movie you can ever dream of.

...illegally. But if you're into watching movies legally, there are always options like Netflix available.
