1 edit | I found a kitten. So today the GF and I were going to take our cars over to my parents house to wash them.
I'm sitting outside of the apartment waiting for the gf and out of the corner of my eye I see this little tiny black and white blur. I turn around and low and behold it's a kitten (pics to follow).
We asked around the apartments if the kitten belonged to anyone here and the people I spoke too said no. It took us about a hlf hr to finally catch the lil bugger as he was running under bushes, branches and shrubbery (knights who say Ni approved btw). We have him in the bathroom, he's got a saucer of food and water.
The reason we have him in there is that we have 2 other cats and I don't know if he/she has feline hiv or leukemia. As much as I'd love to keep him I don't think I can afford to have him checked out by my vet. I can swing the food / toys for him but the initial checkup is going to be expensive.
Are there some sort of free/ pay what you can shelters that give him/her a look over?
ps- the gf has taken a liking to the kitty. -- "They moved my desk 4 times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels and they were married, but then they moved my desk and they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler.

| Thanks for the replies and suggestions! I found that the county I'm in does low cost spay/neuters as well as feline hiv/felv tests.
pss - the kitty is now attached to the gf, crawling all over her. Damn lucky little kitten ! -- "They moved my desk 4 times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels and they were married, but then they moved my desk and they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler.

Feral queens have feral kittens who are afraid of everything and anything (gotta be, raccoons, dogs, possum, cars, human, etc). Seems like you caught him eventually. But in my experience you can't catch them. So is he human tame or not? If he is feral, release him and let him be, kittens grow up to be ugly big cats that get sent to the shelter and killed. Its more natural for him to deal with natures problems (starvation/disease/etc), than be locked in a cage for a month then put to sleep.

So yeah, just because they were once feral doesn't mean they'll always be feral.

| Re: I found a kitten. said by pcdebb : the gf is attached so we know the kitty is staying Yeah, that's how it's happened in my house with the last three kittens we took in. Not that I'm any better, as I've always been a cat person myself, but my wife always tries to act like a hardass, but then once she sees the kitten, it's all over. I'll tell her that someone has a kitten they're trying to find a home for, and right away, she'll say, "Oh no! We have enough cats already! We're not taking in any more!" But then as soon as she sees it, she melts right into, "Oh it's so cute!"
We have six cats now, and we're not taking any more in, at least not until some of the other cats' times come. Just to be safe, we're staying away from people who are trying to find homes for kittens.

| First....This is the infamous "GF" writing....
Even though the I AM attached, we first need to be sure of the kittens health. As much as I wouldn't mind a cat with health issues, the fact that we have 2 others already means any addition would have to be as healthy as they are. We are stopping in to see if we can get any assistance from the local shelters on preliminary vet care and if we can work something out with one of them and all tests come back good, the yes, s/he's staying.
As for a name.....we've been thinking about that. Thus far, we've come up with Yoshi (I'll let you guess who's idea that was) and Yeti. Yeti is an inside joke between us. Our parrots like to watch Nickelodeon cartoons and one such cartoon featured the main characters searching the ice for a yeti (who's call was "YETI - YETI - YETI - YETI - YETI") -- "They moved my desk 4 times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels and they were married, but then they moved my desk and they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler.

| Re: I found a kitten. I just want to point out that if the kitten does turn out to be FIV positive, that does not mean your other cats are in danger. Our cat Teddy was found on someone's back porch when he was about 5-6 months old. We had him checked out and neutered and he was fine. It wasn't until he was about 7 and got very sick that we found out he was FIV positive. Meanwhile, we'd adopted Maggie. It turns out that it's hard to get a good result for an FIV test until the kitten is at least 6 months old. At the same time, it's actually pretty hard to pass it on to another cat unless they bite and draw blood. They can't pass it in food or water bowls. Teddy is now almost 14 and in good health. Maggie is 9 and still FIV negative.

| We had a queen and subsequent litter show up in the front garden, a couple of years back. At the end of weaning, the mom got out and came full of another litter. We had her locked up as the second litter started to wean; but - you can guess what happened.
So in well less than a year we had 18+ cats to find homes for. However, we did just that; -3 we still have. Friends with a pawn shop let me place a large cage there each day. All had homes less than 3 weeks after their weaning.
Mom got fixed (whew!) and off to a farm. She's a serious squirrel killer. We saved up and had our 3 fixed/vaccinated/whatever.
By now, I guess they'd number a hundred or more, without the humans intervention.

| The cat seems too young for it, but I wonder if there's any possibility that it might have an implanted microchip, such as the homeagain ones. the humane society in our area now routinely puts them in the pets they put up for adoption. A vet or the humane society probably could check for you. | |

| If there is a naming going on, might I suggest you honor a recently passed celeb by giving him/her a simple name like "MJ", seeing as how the kitten is black and white, or is it white and black?
Skip over "Oreo" and "Tux" , those are too common of names for a white and black cat. -- No current signature, check back soon!
