to "gf"....i certainly commend the both of you, and i most certainly understand the need of checking the kitten's health. I would think (or at least hope) that the ASPCA or other local agency would at least step in to help to prevent the needless loss of another animal. we need more heroes to rescue animals that are abandoned.
and dont be mad at me, i kinda like Yoshi -- | map your city | |

| reply to stevennb The cat seems too young for it, but I wonder if there's any possibility that it might have an implanted microchip, such as the homeagain ones. the humane society in our area now routinely puts them in the pets they put up for adoption. A vet or the humane society probably could check for you. |

| reply to stevennb If there is a naming going on, might I suggest you honor a recently passed celeb by giving him/her a simple name like "MJ", seeing as how the kitten is black and white, or is it white and black?
Skip over "Oreo" and "Tux" , those are too common of names for a white and black cat. -- No current signature, check back soon! |

He's cute, whichever way you want to go. Kitties are great. I have an adult cat that I adopted. She's my BFF.

It really isn't wise to take a stray animal off the street as this person from my area just found out. |

| reply to stevennb said by stevennb : pss - the kitty is now attached to the gf, crawling all over her. Damn lucky little kitten ! Hmmm. Feral queens have feral kittens who are afraid of everything and anything (gotta be, raccoons, dogs, possum, cars, human, etc). Seems like you caught him eventually. But in my experience you can't catch them. So is he human tame or not? If he is feral, release him and let him be, kittens grow up to be ugly big cats that get sent to the shelter and killed. Its more natural for him to deal with natures problems (starvation/disease/etc), than be locked in a cage for a month then put to sleep. |

| My parents took in a feral queen and her kitten... and they were terrors to deal with at first, especially momma cat. They are now some of the most loving cats I have ever seen.
So yeah, just because they were once feral doesn't mean they'll always be feral. |

| reply to Kramer That is just a single example of something bad happening that Fox news wanted to report. According to the CDC there have only been 37 cases of rabies in humans between 1990 and 2005 and rabies is only found in 3 to4% of cats.

1 edit | reply to grobinette That wasn't Fox news reporting it, but the AP. The incident happened a few miles from here a few days ago and all the local media covered it in detail. The 3 to 4% number sounds awfully high, as that would mean 1 in every 25 cats has rabies. If that were the case and I were the OP, I would be very concerned. In fact if I were a cat owner that hadn't obtained the rabies vaccination for my cat, I would be very concerned. Rabies kills tens of thousands of people worldwide each year. It is only because of a good public health system and strict local laws that we avoid the problem. People that bring feral cats into their homes are doing so against the advice of local health officials. People that don't get the proper vaccinations for their pets are lacking in common sense.
Edit: You misread the article. rabies isn't found in 3 to 4% of cats, rabies in cats is 3 to 4% of reported cases. |

| My apology for the misread/mistype. Some mornings are just that way.
Point I was trying to make is that while there is always a risk in bringing a feral cat in to your house, the risk of getting bitten and contracting rabies from a cat, while real, is also limited.

Based on the O/P's statement, the kitten is obviously learning to like people. Most cats by nature are afraid of the unfamiliar, whatever the circumstances of their birth. It's what they experience during their lives that shapes their personalities. |

I have 2 other cats , one looks like Morris the Cat (with freckles!) and the other is a grey tabby (he's adorable but he gets into everything...behind things, over things, etc).
So far we've been lucky, no cats trying to eat us....the occasional nibble here and there.
When we found the kitten yesterday he/she was hissing and all that. Later that night we sat in the bathroom with the kitten between us. Now it runs up to us and purrs and loves to climb all over us. Especially me (as I'm shaped like a human bean bag). -- "They moved my desk 4 times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels and they were married, but then they moved my desk and they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler. |

At first, they are cute and | cudly. | Then they get big. | They start taking your money. | They start to exceed their welcome. | They start acting like they own you. | Depriving you of your own things. | And finally you throw them out on the street. |

RUN RUN AWAY NOW RUN AWAY FROM THE EVIL KITTY KAT! Moral of story, pets are serious business. Kittens and puppies NEVER stay as kittens and puppies. They grow into demanding adults (or teenagers). Don't get one unless you have the resources for a life time commitment. Just put him back on the street where he was if you can't devote to him forever. He will make a good natural meal for hungry raccoon or dog. |
