1 edit | reply to stevennb The kitty is a cutey pie to say the least.
So far we've noticed that it has a stuffy nose and sneezes a bit.
Tomorrow I'm going to contact the local animal shelter and/or a vet I use to see if they can give the kitten a looksie (for free hopefully).
Normally I'm not this broke but I'm moving to a new apartment and between the truck rental (soon) and the security deposit...I'm tapped.
If anything ,I suppose (too the dismay of me,the gf and the other kitties here) we might have to bring the kitten to a shelter. If that's the case the shelter would have to be a no kill shelter. -- "They moved my desk 4 times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels and they were married, but then they moved my desk and they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler. |

1 edit | reply to UnrealArcher said by UnrealArcher :My parents took in a feral queen and her kitten... and they were terrors to deal with at first, especially momma cat. They are now some of the most loving cats I have ever seen. So yeah, just because they were once feral doesn't mean they'll always be feral. We took in a feral queen Siamese and her 5 kittens. 1 is a male Siamese and the sisters are all black. They were born in our shed on our property. They are all happy here and now behave normally after our loving care. Sadly, the mother died this past December of old age. We really miss her. |

| reply to Kramer Those 17 people will be really sick when they get the bill for the rabies treatment. I just finished my last treatment today. It is a series of shots given 5 times over a 4 week interval on Day 0, 3, 7, 14 and 21 from exposure.
The first round of shots , on day 0, was almost $9,500. The rabies vaccine was $850. The imunogloben was $8,000 and the ER fee was $550.
The next 4 treatments were just the rabies vaccine and the ER fee so they were "only" $1,400 each. Total bill will be almost $15,000 !!! I know the insurance company has negotiated rates so it should end up less in the end.
I was not bitten by an animal but exposed to possible rabies infected saliva from a raccoon who was fighting with our cat. My gun was locked in a cabinet so I could not get it fast enough to kill the raccoon. My primary concern was trying to separate the 'coon and the cat. Raccoon got away and could not be tested. Without the head you can't be certain if the animal was infected. Did you know you can contract rabies even if you just touch the saliva and rub you eye? You do not have to be bitten. Since I did handle the cat after the attack, I was at risk.
So the message: Be very careful when you pick up a wild mammal. It could cost you a LOT more than a $100. vet bill.
BTW: The only place you can get rabies treatment by me is in the emergency room. Doctor's offices do not treat. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

| reply to stevennb Oh wow, what a cute kitten. I have a 14 (pushing 15) year old "tuxedo" cat (what you have here now). He was an abused barn cat. At first he was a bit stand-ofish, but he has been my living companion and best buddy for a long time.
These cats typically have fantastic dispositions as adults, and excellent genetic lineages, meaning they will be a faithful friend for a long long time.
My suggestion would be to do what you can to make him/her part of your family. These cats make fantastic pets.
If you do keep him, 10 years from now you will thank me you did.
Like I said, mine is pushing 15 and he's still as playful as a kitten. Anything I dangle or toss at him gets played with..... -- Petty people are disproportionably corrupted by petty power

| reply to newz71 said by newz71 :If there is a naming going on, might I suggest you honor a recently passed celeb by giving him/her a simple name like "MJ", seeing as how the kitten is black and white, or is it white and black? Skip over "Oreo" and "Tux" , those are too common of names for a white and black cat. BOOOOOOOOO! Sir. My Tuxedo cat's name is "Oreo", and he's DA MAN!!!.
Let's see, a kid born the same year will be a sophomore in HS this year!

| reply to stevennb Stray cats usually have fleas and worms. I had a tiny kitten die, probably because of the worms. Could have been something like distemper, which can cause a kitten to just drop dead rather quickly.
The sneezing could be a respiratory disease. What are the marks on his nose?
In any case, if the vet can't give you a good discount, ask about a payment plan. Maybe he'll let you slide for 6 months.

| I checked the meow for fleas and didn't see any nor is she scratching at all.
I don't see any discharge from the eyes.
As for the nose, she's got a runny nose and it seems that she's having problems breathing through her nose (stuffed?).
Other than that she's very playful, runs around, cuddles, etc. -- "They moved my desk 4 times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels and they were married, but then they moved my desk and they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler. |

| reply to stevennb I know in Hunterdon County NJ and also in Hillside NJ they had a place that would subsidize the shots and spay/neutering of feral cats for cheap but they of course hold on to the cat for awhile unlike where at the vets they do everything and then send them home. So they probably have a humane society up by you that probably does the same. If you are going to give him up I am willing to take him since my kids got a sick kitten that passed away after eight days and we have yet to get another one. |

@myvzw.com | reply to stevennb I believe in Hunterdon it was some kind of Trap,Neuter and release program that I don't recall the name that did it cheap and in Hillside it was the people for animals in which I think they have a website. |
