| Great new deal?
Hey all,
I've been a happy Teksavvy customer for over 3 years now (Go Rocky! Woo)
Anyway, I am moving in August and am at that point where I am re-evaluating my services, namely my home telephone. I presently have a home phone with bell that must get about 20 minutes of use a month on it... I obviously need a home line for my internet at the new place. How are people liking their teksavvy home phone?
Also, I got this thing in the mail today from Primus:
Home Phone 7 Meg DSL internet (No Caps, No Throttling) (I am .39km from the CO the lady tells me) Unlimited long distance, and I can add unlim to 40 countries for 5 bucks...
Total cost... 65 / month! That seems insanely low, and to cap it off with no caps, its hard to turn down...
Now, I don't torrent very much (but its the principle) and I mostly use newsgroups anyway, but the rate for just home phone from them was 62 / month (Yeah I didn't get it either)
What are your thoughts on Primus, vs Tek for home phone?
Also, is Teksavvy's home phone a resold Yak product? (A company I also enjoy?) And is Yak's a resold Teksavvy product?) |

1 edit | $62 for just home phone... whaaaaat?? I think you've got some quotes wrong somewhere.. AFAIK, home phone is up to $25ish at the top end(?) +$20 unlimited LD = $45 from TSI Add on DSL and you're at $75 A little more than the Primus deal, but not that far off.
Edit: Sorry, +10 for unlimited.
Still a pretty good deal on Primus' front. Only question is customer service.. |

| reply to malocite Watch these flyers in the mail. I've seen ones for Primus and Distributel. Both had a really good teaser rate and then upped the price down the road.
Primus deal: Now you can enjoy Primus Local Home Phone Service - including Call Display, Voice Mail, & Visual Call Waiting plus, DSL High Speed Internet and Unlimited Long Distance within Canada and to the U.S. all for only $74.95/mo.*
Primus' fine print:
*Requires a 1 year commitment and becomes $84.95/mo. in month 13. $99.95 early cancellation fee will apply to customers who terminate their Local service prior to their 1-year Local anniversary. 40¢ monthly 911 charge applies. |

| I saw that. I was offered 65 bucks in mine with an increase to 75 after year 1... but still not BAD for unlim / no throttle plus phone... so it makes me wonder.
The only thing tugging at me is no throttling.... its too bad Primus were dicks and said no to Teksavvy wanting to rent space from them... hmmm... there is that going against them too....
but wait, I can get air miles! Oh curse this decision making.... |

1 edit | TekSavvy's LD service is 2.9 cents per minute to NA, so if you don't use LD much, that's probably good enough.
Comparable from TekSavvy would be:
TekSavvy Unlimited + MLPPP: $43.95 TekSavvy home phone: $21.48
Total: $65.43/mth
So, it comes out to the same as Primus, although a little bit slower.
If you were to go for VoIP and dry-loop (no phone line) instead:
TekSavvy Unlimited + MLPPP + dry loop: $51.20 (assuming band A) VoIP DID: $1.95/mth (varies, usually around there, per-minute NA is usually something like 1.5 cents per minute) Total: $53.15
And finally, the cheapest option, premium (200GB cap) and VoIP (also going to assume the group discount):
TekSavvy Premium + MLPPP + dry loop: $39.29 (assuming band A+group) VoIP DID: $1.95/mth (varies, usually around there, per-minute NA is usually something like 1.5 cents per minute) Total: $41.24
So as you can see, it's not hard to beat Primus' offering! |

| reply to Jazdi Well, yeah, Primus has their own DSLAMs, so their service offering is 7mbit and TekSavvy is limited by Bell to 5mbit. Real-world speed difference should be something like 225KB/s (as in, 550 vs 775, I'd guess).
The group discount is where you form a group with 4 or more people (or lines) get $2 off each person per month. From the way malocite was talking (about how he was very happy with the service and a long-time customer), I made the assumption that he likely knows enough people using TekSavvy to do this. If not, his cost goes up by $2, not a big change to my calculations. Add $1.91 pre-tax, I believe. |

1 edit | Ahh. Thats a nice price $33.99. Hmm.. Lemme see if I can convert a few friends of mine over to Teksavvy! hehe
As it is right now, i'm with the
dry loop $29.95+band (9.10?) = $40 ish (no mlppp/static) but thinking of getting it. Voip: Callcentric $5.95 (unlimited incoming, 0.0198 outgoing locally)
I've got word now that they will be supporting E911 come tomorrow they say. I asked today and one of the tech guys said it would be up and running tomorrow. woot! |

| Wups, yeah, sorry, I messed up on the final set of prices there, forgot to add the dry loop fee.
I suggest you think first about the unlimited plan for Callcentric; their pay-as-you-go DID is $1.95, and $0.015 per minute, so you'd have to use more than 267 minutes of incoming minutes a month to justify it. If you do, then great, if you don't, save the money. |

join:2001-11-14 Windsor, ON | oh its not pay as you go DID.. I got the "DID - Personal Unlimited". The outgoing is pay as you go/per minute.
As of right now, still no notification on e911 yet. |
|
Guspaz Guspaz Premium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC | Yeah, I was saying that the unlimited DID is only justified (it costs $4 extra) if you use more than 267 incoming minutes a month. Otherwise the pay as you go one is cheaper. |

| reply to malocite VOIP.ms is very interesting too...
1.49$US/month for a number in most cities in Ontario/Quebec.... it's 1.99 for all other provinces in Canada.
at this price, you pay for what you use. at 1.49$US, it's 1¢/minute for incoming calls... and begginng at 0.3 or 0.4¢/minutes for outgoing calls. If you want unlimited incoming, it starts at 4.95$US/month (depending where you are in Canada).
And E911 is available with VOIP.ms for 1.50$US/month per DID.
VOIP has all options enabled without charging you more (except for E911)... you can get a toll free number... or more than one DID in different cities... you can configure a digital receptionist... call filter... tech support is excellent too!!!
I've tried different VOIP provider... and VOIP.ms is simply the best for me. |

Guspaz Guspaz Premium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC | reply to malocite Their toll-free numbers can't be called from a payphone, I'm told, unfortunately. That's a major inconvenience. |

| reply to malocite Whats DID ? can you give url to their site ?
might not be a company the way you are talking about it but not sure. Im a bit noob on the phone side.
can you give url for the other provider as well ? I might be tempted by a cheap voip provider with 911.
thanks |

Guspaz Guspaz Premium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC | reply to malocite DID is an acronym, it stands for Direct Inward Dialing. Essentially, it's a phone number. If you buy a DID, you're buying a phone number.
VoIP service is made up of two components, a DID for incoming calls, and service for outbound calls. |

So if I understand correctly, on callcentric site : 0$ per month is a bit misleading since you still have to pay for a DID for incoming calls for 1.95 per month. |
