 Replacing my VCR

Until now I have been using my VCR to record TV shows so I can watch them at my convenience. Last night, however, I think it died. So I am looking to replace it and apparently, VCRs are not as popular anymore as I thought. I guess I could get another VCR but I have heard about these "DVR"s as well. Can you get those at Best Buy? What do people suggest as a good replacement for my VCR?

What's this "VCR" thing you mention?

You probably should mention how your picking up your stations. That is, over air, cable, sat?

Heck, if you want a VCR you could probably find a good used one for about $5. I have a very nice one that is perfect condition sitting in my basement you could have for shipping costs.

Welcome to 2009 Kidding aside check with your cable/satellite company to see what they offer for a DVR. There are some stand alone DVRs but they generally do not have all of the features that your provider will offer.

They do make DVD-powered devices that operate similar to the way your VCR does, this may be an option, especially with a DVD-RW.

Something like the Pioneer DVR-533H-S comes to mind though others can be found which are less expensive.

Get a tivo, or dvd recorder. If you feel like installing a tuner in your pc you could also record the tv shows on your computer.

Another VCR! Get one for $2 at a thrift store.

Oddly enough you can find VCR, but, they run about $300 and more now, and most don't have a tuner in it anymore so you can't program programs you can only record what you are watching which is dumb.
I have 4 VCRs and am still looking in thrift shops and ebay for more.
I am not going to pay to record.

VCR/DVD Combo units are still out there ($100) or so.
One example:

[EDIT] Oops! it's tunerless. I had one of these a while back and it did have a tuner.

tivo does more than what a cable company dvr can do.

Need more info from OP as tcope See Profile mentioned. How is he getting signal, etc....though if he's still using a VCR, I got $5 on coat hanger and aluminum foil.

I keed.

Might also want to let us know your spending amount and geek level, as there are many options available to you.

Easiest would be to get another VCR. A step up from that would be to get a DVD recorder and some re-writable media, as has been mentioned. From there, you either go the HTPC (Home Theater PC) or a DVR of some sort. If you have cable, often they will provide one to you for a rental fee. You can also buy one of these units as well...but they can be difficult to find, and you have to make sure you get the kind that are supported by your cable co.

You can also buy a TiVo, which (and I don't have one, so if I tell lies here, someone with one will surely correect me) you have to subscribe to their service, and they feed your DVR with the programming info etc. Its pretty smart as well, as it will search out progs you like based on what you record, and find things you might be interested in, etc.

Hope that helps...give us some more info and we can get you closer to what ya need.

The problem with renting a dvr from your provider is you can't really save the programming unless you take the time to record it to another media, and if it has a problem, it just gets replaced without you having a chance to backup the recordings. They are also always not the same from every provider so it's better to get one more universal like a tivo, or use your pc.

How is it different w/ a Tivo?

and the other problem with renting from your provider is just that...you're renting. Depending on how long you plan on having it, you'll eventually lose money.

Not when the DVR rental fee is equal or less than TiVo's monthly fees (plus cable card fees, where applicable).

TiVo's a fantastic product but it's not the most budget friendly thing.

Maybe cruise E-bay for a used TiVo with lifetime service.

Very true. I was just trying to point out that there is something to be said for buying your cab'e co's DVR rather than renting it from them.

They'd be available in the same place recommended for the TiVo. (ebay)

The only DVR I ever used was giganews so I wasn't sure which was better.
