»Comcast DVR Repeat
Hello Everyone,
Please Post any issues when recording with a DVR. Example Given, when recording Oprah and set the series to record New Only you are still receiving repeats. Example Posts should contain the below information. Thank you to everyone who has assisted gathering examples. Please feel free to post any questions or contact me if needed.
1. What show? 2. What time? 3. What channel? 4. Was this recorded on a DVR? 5. Which box are you using? This is important. Is the box a Motorola or Scientific Atlanta? 6. Is this intermittent? 7. Was this a live event? 8. Any additional info you may feel useful.
Thank you. *** UPDATED 07/15/09 *** Hello Everyone, I apologize for the delay. I would like to provide a few updates. This isssue increase dramatically increased due to a third party data error. They are working as quickly as possible to resolve this issue. All of their leadership, our cable and customer service leadership are involved working together to resolve ASAP. However, prior to this event as many of you and including myself have experienced there is still an underlying issue which we continue to work on. Please continued to provide examples as each of you have done. We are working towards a complete resolution for the underlying issue on both the third party side and Comcast side later this year. If you should have any questions, please feel free to post, send a private message or email me at anytime. Thank you all for your continued patience and understanding. |

|
 | reply to CCGeorge I have always had this problem with the Simpsons on Fox. I could never successfully record just the new episodes on Sunday night (without a manual recording).
I see the note about this getting worse recently. My personal experience with the recent problems is Hannah Montana on Disney. Do a search for Hannah Montana, ask it to record just the new ones. Look at the schedule and you'll see it recording a VERY large number of the upcoming reruns (although not all of them). Some of the reruns are marked reruns in the description, but others are not.
I would LOVE if they offered the option of "New or Unknown". |

| reply to CCGeorge it seems to me like all episodes even old ones aren't marked new or repeat so the dvr sees it as new and records all of them. I wish they fix it so that anything beyond the first two airings of an show are marked repeat and the dvr would only record the ones marked new. Also how about providing an description of each show's episode and whether it is new or not instead of just showing a general description of the show?
Of course I don't see this happening until the j-guide comes out in 2010 or 2011 but it's one thing that needs worked on. |

| They'd need to create a db table in the DVR memory or hard drive to keep track of what's been recorded. That might likely require more licencing of Tivo's patents, which would cost money and require $x for each set top box in royalty fees. Otherwise they could face a Dish Network debacle with a huge $1 billion (or more) lawsuit. |
|
 | reply to CCGeorge comcast could buyout tivo with their money. |

You're telling me that a provider (say TVGOS) assigning a different ID number to every unique program, and the the DVR checking the list of already-recorded ID's, has been patented?

| reply to mikedz4 said by mikedz4:comcast could buyout tivo with their money. Almost wish they would. Then we'd get a better DVR. Tivo isn't all good though. They still have a stretched SD interface and no VOD support. Plus clumsy add ons for SDV support. Tivo is OK but nothing out there is perfect yet. Not even Moxi. |

Jeff You'd be surprised what's patented. Dish network was sued from Tivo. Tivo also pays royalties to Macrovision and TV Guide, as well as vice versa for certain functionality, even if it's implemented in a different manor, the theory and operation is patented. I'm against it as well, but hey this is the country we live in. |

 | reply to CCGeorge lol had a marathon of law n order criminal intent scheduled to record (USA network) beginning at about 3:00 amand going through 5:00 pm today. all marked as repeats too. same thing happening with the Deadliest Catch. scheduling to record episodes marked as repeats even though i have it set record only New. |

andyrossPremium,MVM join:2003-05-04 Schaumburg, IL | As others mentioned, now that the Repeat flags are starting to appear, you need to wait for or force a rescan. I had that with "Lost" on WLS Sunday nights, and it fixed itself last night.
Still no repeat flags on 'This Old House' on WTTW yet. |

 | reply to CCGeorge Having this issue with:
Deadliest Catch on DiscHD - Only record NEW set Cake Boss on TLCHD - Only record NEW set LOST on ABCHD - Only record NEW set |

1 edit | So are most of the problems due to the poor guide data quality (mentioned in the first post)?
I've noticed in the past few weeks a maddening number of repeats that aren't flagged either way and thus are scheduled to record. I've had to give up on multiple series recordings and just schedule things by hand.
I too would like to echo the request for a "New Only" recording type, that only records programs flagged as new, and doesn't even bother with programs that aren't flagged. |

TiVo does this, Windows Media Center does it, as does SageTV and other PC DVR programs some of which like MythTV are open source programs (which means no money to pay licensing fees). Tribune who provides the guide data to Windows Media Center and SageTV (and used to provide data to TiVo, but I think they switched to Gemstar), includes unique IDs when they have the proper data from the networks. I don't see why the cable company DVR cannot do the same. |

| reply to SpHeRe31459 Well Sphere I hope your right. I was always told that Tivo has the process patented and that's the reason why our DVR's suck. Well Comcast is supposed to roll out Tivo on DVR's, but that really didn't go further then a few area's in the new england region. They say Chicago should get the option shortly, but I'm not holding my breath. |

 | reply to CCGeorge i had to delete a few series recordings (gene simmons family jewels and deadliest catch) because there is a non stop marathon of them airing at the same time tonight and all day tomorrow. even if i cancel one show it will record the other one. with my dvr at bout 75% full id run out of space tomorrow and it would delete stuff i havent watched yet. if i were gonna be home tomorrow i could babysit it and manually cancel them but ill be gone all day. |

I noticed the same thing. I posted it here: »[DVR] Can't delete a scheduled recording.
and also in the Comcast official forums. Also tweeted it to Frank @ Comcast and he is aware of it. I power cycled the box just to see if it would download some fresh guide data. You never know, it might help. |
|
 | Well power cycling didn't do the trick. Still can't cancel lockup and desperate housewives at the same time. It's one or the other. Still shows all the shows tomorrow in my scheduled list but they are "To Be Announced". |
