howie1Premium join:2003-04-08 Antarctica kudos:4 | [iO] Cablevision/TWC vs. FioS Commercial I just saw this for the first time today and found it quite funny. It shows FioS customers returning equipment so they can get back their cable. One older woman says "Cablevision has News 12... FioS doesn't!" That's the one channel I don't watch! Anyway, I thought it was a pretty good commercial. -- Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.6Ghz - Asus P5Q Mainboard - Sapphire HD3870 512MB PCI-E 2.0 Video - 4GB (2X2GB) Corsair XMS2 PC6400 DDR2 RAM - AC Freezer 7 Pro HSF - 2 Seagate 1TB HDD's (7200.11/12) - 1 Seagate 320GB HDD (7200.10) - Windows Vista Ultimate x86 |

 | Why do you think the commercial is good? it's just a poor attemp by botch cable companies, because at the time their networks just dont compare to FIOS. I just switched from cablevision and could not be happier with Verizon FIOS. My picture always pixelated on on my HD channels when there was too much fast moving action or big explosions. My Boost internet 30/5 connection never reached more than 18Mbps. I have been a cablevision customer for over 10 years and their service has degraded over those years each year. Cable CO's need to fix up theier networks and provide their services in a better manner instead of making mis-leading commercials, Everything about my FIOS service is better. I have a much better HD picture, I have a muh better SD picture. I have more On demand tittles. My internet connection works at the advertised speeds all day long no matter what time of day it is. If you have never seen fios in person I can understand your not understanding what um talking about. I used to be the same way up until 3 weeks ago. Verizon FIOS mostly lives up to everything they advertise. I cannot say the same for cablevision or Time warner for that matter. |

But my question is does anyone actually watch commercials? Even howie1 ? |
|
 | reply to howie1 When I get my first bill I'll pay it just like I payed my last non triple play bill with cable vision which was like $224. If the bill seems out of place I'll call them and have it straightened out. I keep hearing horror stories over your first fios bill and bad customer support. everytime I've called them I've had good support. But all of this does not change that fact that cable co's infrastructure is old and out dated and at the moment cannot compete with level and quality of service you get with fios. Even if I have to pay a lil more than for cable it' worth it. I'am quality over quanity type of person. I'd rather have something work great and pay a premium price than to pay less and get less service. With FIOS I get crsytal clear tv picture and rock steady internest speed all day. two things I could say with cablevision. Now as far as home phone goes I never had a problem with OV so I cant compare it against verizon. But then again I never really used my home phone that often, maybe 3-4 times a month. But by all means if your happy with CV then stick with them but if you want a far superior product then get FIOS. Until CV and all other Cable CO's invest more money into their infrastructures and provide fiber to your home or at least closer to your home, and have less of a shared infrasturcture, there will always be limitations and problems with cable. Right verizon has the edge as far as networks. If you've ever seen fios in action will become a believer. |

 | reply to howie1 I almost forgot I too have seen the commercial. I thought it was funny only because it was a poor attemp by both companies to try and mislead the un-educated about the differences of both technologies. I mean cablevision has news 12??? who freaking cares I have never watched that channel for news EVER!! Ny1 I never watched either. What both of them need to do is try and educate their customers on what exactly they think they technologically over fios, instead of these silly commercials. Or better yet do something about their shortcomings to FIOS. |

4 edits | reply to howie1 I couldn't agree more. FIOS service is so much better than cables for the money you pay...and it costs less to boot. I actually look forward to watching TV. In 10 years of false promises from cable to upgrade the outdated RG-59u wiring in my building that led to constant trouble calls from everyone here, and the techs just coming out and switching lines back and forth from the junction box....just deplorable.
I received my first FIOS bill and had to call because of an activation fee that was supposed to be waived. I was through to a rep in less than 5 minutes, unlike any call ever made to cable, then mentioned that the activation fee was supposed to be waived as the rep who signed me up (and I gave his name ) promised. Without me even finishing my sentence the fee was waived and on top they gave me 90 days free for the movie package. The rep was polite, was kidding around, and was sorry for me when i mentioned I used to work for cable, and did not sound like a micro-managed robot that was nervous about saying the wrong thing. It was truly a pleasant experience and more like a chat with a friend on the line. Now that is what I call customer service, not once in 20 years with cable and working for them for 5 in that span did I ever recieve such a quick and to the point conclusion without hassle and got something for free on top. By the way, I just received my second bill and it was 79.99 for all 3 services...right on target.
Oh, and to add, I finally had to call cable for the 3rd time after disconnecting because they keep billing me although i was promised by the walk in center rep upon returning equipment, and another rep I had to call to stop billing me, they actually owed me money for cancelling before the end of the month...we shall see if this last rep did his job correctly and the check is on its way as he advised. I never called to cancel service, just dropped everything off at a walk in center and cancelled. This guy then asked me what he could offer to go back to cable, I told him; you could offer me free service for the next 2 years and I still would not come back and hung up....love how they treat you like crap for years, then when it's really way to late, try to butter you up...quite pathetic and desperate....guess they must be feeling the pinch from FIOS with the lame, misleading commercials and desperate pleas to bring you back. |
|
 | I feel the same way Patriot. I look forward to looking at tv because I know it's going to look pristine. I gave cablevision as long as I could possibly give them to improve service, and I think 6 years is long enough. The Cable CO's need to stop pushing these misleading commercials and spend that money on their networks so they can bring more to table to compete with FIOS. FIOS is superior to Cable in almost every way, and anyone else who disagrees is either misinformed or in denial. |

 | reply to howie1 Yeah, thats about it.
Been with OOL for over 10 years, and speeds are simply not as advertised to downright pitiful.
I give them credit for 100% uptime, but they are simply not delivering what I pay for in terms of speed. Never too crazy about the throttled news servers either.
Fios here I come. |

Fios here I come. Didn't Verizon remove most of the binary groups from their news server? Or did they add them back? -- University of Southern California - Class of 2010. Fight On! |
|
3 edits | reply to howie1 No they have removed them all. It doesn't matter I use a premium newsgroups server anyway. Have been using them since 2003. And OOLisDone I would suggest you make the swtich believe me you wont regret it at all. Internet speed is consistent all day long not just 2am and later here's test result from speedtest.net using OOL speed test server. I pay for 35Mbps down/20Mbps up. And that's exactly what I get.

|
 | reply to howie1 I'd probably switch to FIOS for the better TV picture except they have that stupid no server policy. On Boost I run a web server on port 80 and get a lot of use out of it. What a hosting service with that kind of throughput costs it's worth having OOL just for that alone. |

 | reply to jefe said by jefe:I got my first bill. And 2nd and 3rd. I'm saving ~$60/mo. But my question is does anyone actually watch commercials? Even howie1 ? how are people saving money with FiOS over CVC? I pirce FiOS every time I get a mailer and it comes out to about $20 more than cable.
I pay CVC $148 for triple play service / no movie channels / 1 DVR. FiOS is more since I need 5 boxes and online they don't offer the plain, digital adapter boxes.
The one thing I can't get an answer on is how much the taxes for FiOS are. I had heard about $18. I also called VZ to pirce it and when I said I lived in NJ the rep wasn't able to give me pricing info?!??!
Could someone post a copy of their bill. It would really help. |

jefePremium join:2001-05-19 Northport, NY | Here are the charges from my last FiOS bill:
FiOS Triple Freedom $94.99 TV additional Services $27.96 Taxes, Fees, & Other charges $17.98 Total $140.93
Since that bill I re-upped for the 35/20 plan (previously 20/5) for another $5/mo, and all Showtime channels for another $5/mo.
My service includes 2 HD boxes, one of which is a DVR. Multi-room DVR (so I can see programming that was recorded on the DVR on the non-DVR HD box in another part of the house), and 3 SD boxes for our 3 non-HD TV's.
Remote DVR is included, so I can manage recordings on the DVR via the Web using any brower...or from my Blackberry.
My last bill at CV was $145.04. That was for regular (no Boost) OOL, family cable, 2 iO boxes, iO DVR. NO movies, or any speical channels. At the time I was paying ~$60 mo for my POTS line, which I can't give up.
So for me, the savings I'm seeing is my POTS line is now included in my monthly package. Thus the $60 I figure I'm saving. And for that, I get really good TV picture quality. Lots of channels, HD and SD. Showtime. And 35/20 (that tests out closer to 35/30 24/7).
FiOS is working for me. |

Now why don't you stick with your own kind and post to your hearts content on your FIOS Forum. -- Trying is the first step towards failure. |
|
 | well thats easy trade, we have nothing to post in that forum because we are stating the obvious, besides, we were all cable customers for years before converting, not vice versa, and being FIOS is the new kid on the block, people just may be interested in hearing this instead of dealing with the same old, same old cable BS as they sit on the fence. it is what competition is all about and honest, fair input of those that switched when a comparison commercial topic is raised.....I see no harm in that...does it hurt your eyes to see this? Why do some people get so defensive about this stuff....I just don't get it. |

 | reply to howie1 I thought the commericial was funny typical disinformation campaign.
I am a cablevision user, Verizon didn't bother the wire our apartment building for fios, while the rest of the residential area has it. guess I'm on the wrong side of the tracks for there cherry-picked service.
I've love to give fios a try, I am interested if the tv picture is any better, but cablevision isn't as bad as people seem to make them out to be, I have a steady 30/5 internet connection as well as cable and telephone that never go out on me, so while I would love to try fios, I'm not dying for it, fios just has more fanboys since it's new and still cool to get. |

Does anyone remember the old Cablevision vs. satellite commercials back in the '90s and the early 2000's OOL one where Latrelle Sprewell's (sp?) refuses to say "it's stupid fast"?
[EDIT] BTW... the guy above gave me all the the premium channels for $50. Try and get THAT deal with FiOS! |
