Verizon FIOS Northern VA

Just spoke with a verizon rep who said that Northern VA is expected to have 98% FIOS penetration in Q2 2010. He said by July next year, verizon's expecting to have FIOS just about everywhere they want it.

Yeah. I got a door tag for it. And, it's apparently available in parts of my neighborhood - just not on my street.

Once you get the door tag, that means your street is probably slated to start construction in a month or two. They dug up my street last week and are continuing all around my neighborhood. Got the white door hanging notice around May.

I hope that they want it about everywhere.

"They want it" tends to mean "where the housing density is high enough that we'll actually recoup our investment, and the rest of you can go fly a kite". Not an unreasonable position, I suppose.

For those of us out in BFE-land, we're gonna be stuck with Concast for quite a while -- especially if DSL isn't already available. VZ is completely uninterested in building new DSL facilities now that FiOS is the flagship product. I suppose some CLEC might ride to the rescue but in this economy I doubt it.

There is a downside to living out in BFE.

On the other hand we had the fiber infrastructure in place for almost two years before it became available. It used to annoy me to no end to go out and see those quazite boxes in the alley all ready to light up and transport me to fios nirvana but not be able to use them.

Meanwhile, Dupont Circle is "officially" slated for deployment in 2014-15. They can't touch Ward 2 until they have met all of their required targets outside Ward 2. I hope they haul ass meeting their other targets so they might hit the "earliest possible deployment date" for us (2012-13). Dupont/Logan and Cap Hill are the areas with the highest density of their dream demographic in the city...and the last on the list for deployment as an incentive for VZ to not drag their feet or do a half-assed rollout in other neighborhoods.

In the meantime, I'm stuck with Comcrap for TV for at least another 3 years. Farggin District politics.

The only thing keeping me from getting it in NoVA is my apt complex -- I talked to a rep and she said that all of the addresses on our street had it, except for the apt building that I'm in!

After initial attempts to ask the apt mgmt about getting it installed failed, I'm hoping that a "we will move if you don't get fios" petition will convince them.
