1 edit | NYPD spends $1 million on typewritters....THIS year
Ok this is a little crazy, but apparently the NYPD (New York City Police Department) just bought $1m worth of typewriters from Swintec, the manufacturer. A quick glance at their website shows that some models cost up to $1000 EACH. With remarkable features like a whopping "48K of memory", I am truly baffled by this. Not only is it absurd the NYPD is still buying these things, but why do they cost so damn much? $1000 (on the government discount mind you) can get you a sweet PC, so this makes no sense. Thoughts??

| Well when I was arrested back in July of 08 they had my case 99% computerized.
Fingerprints, Case evidence against me, along with a whole bunch of other crap.
Except the very last thing, D.A.T. (Desk Appearance Ticket)
This was typed out by a desk sergeant with a typewriter.

| reply to wifi4milez Many forms are still not computerized. In this case you need a typewriter. My company still uses typewriters regularly. In addition, some forms, such as those with an official seal, cannot be computerized until the concept of digital seals are more widespread. Also, unfortunately, government institutions work at an agonizingly slow pace, making sure that all laws are followed with each step of a project. This isn't limited to just the NYPD.
The Post's shock line says they're paying "up to $649" for some models, so it is rather misleading and irresponsible how you're throwing out that $1000 tidbit, which serves no purpose here. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

| reply to wifi4milez Like The Dv8or said, I know of some military forms which are still not computerized and we got to pull out an ancient typewriter out of the back closet to complete the form. It happens less and less now though as last time I remember it was the end of 2006 when I needed a typewriter to complete a form. |

| reply to wifi4milez $650 for a type writer. It requires (hopefully) only basic maintenance, and ribbons that cost ~$5.
Or $600 for a moderate model Dell, roughly $400 a year for a Microsoft site license, a $3000 special purpose label printer, another $200/year for the site license to use the special software that printer uses. Oh yeah, and then the $60,000 per IT technician to support the really expensive network infastructure those special purpose label printing machines use.
*shudder*
I can see why they did this. IT WAS TO TYPE EVIDENCE LABELS MAN! -- VGMasters my video game forum |
