Really, have you been to one of these cities? Sometimes it's harder to provide access.

Sure. Sometimes the DSLAM can be full up and can't accomodate any more cards. Anything can happen.

But on the whole, cities are serviced far more readily than rural areas. That is, there is a greater incentive for the telcos to "make it work" in an urban setting because there is more money to be made vs. a rural setting.

Try telling some people out in the boonies that you'd like to charge them $200 a month for broadband to offset infrastructure costs and the answer will not always be "Heck, yeah! Sign us up!" :p

But it DOES take population density to make the RT's feasable.... prety much the entire 150 mil long but 100's of yard wide mostly.... made that quickly possible.... and demand for it....

But spraling rural areas where might be 1/4mi between properties and just a dozen or so potential customers.... that gets MUCH more costly to supply.

I will say in their defense: It costs a lot of money each month for the uplinks to a backbone provider and maybe they don't have the bandwidth (yet) to offer more without causing trouble throughout the system.

This isn't true as a blanket statement. You could say "generally speaking lower throughput is a cost of rural life"
But not all rural areas or service providers are alike.
(I'm just saying, that's all)

A lot of these smaller providers take the risk first when it comes to new technology and vendors use these smaller providers as a test bed before rolling out new products.

I just have to hang some wire off a pole, in the city most of it is underground (am I right?) I think it's harder to do it in the city due to the infrastructure that is already in place.

He was concerned about what speeds we're getting and said that we should expect a consistent 1 Meg where I'm located. He said that they expect to have a new DSLAM at the end of my road (a little over a mile) before winter and that we should be a good deal faster then. He said that everyone's set for 1.5 Meg max for fairness of coverage to all areas (close-in homes could be getting 4-5 Meg, but they are trying to make everyone equal (state regulatory?) and don't have tiered offerings) and that they were implementing new DSLAMs around the area. He said that at 1.5, that's about as fast as normal web sites serve up pages so that I should expect normal page-to-page web surfing to be as fast as I'd experience it on other ISPs (even faster ones). He said that the box near me had a shortage of voice ports currently (or something like that). He said that 256K (the package offered) was not acceptable, but didn't say why that's the package. I told him I'd keep a record of actual speeds and tracerts so that he could have a rich data set. We discussed what I may be able to do in my home to get rid of any dead ends on old phone lines that haven't been used for years. He said that my tracert hops should be around 30, not in the 40s as I have seen. Overall a good call and the kind of professional and courteous service that I have come to expect from Shoreham Tel. I'll keep the data set and follow up regarding whether they install our new DSLAM before winter and see how that impacts the numbers and report back here.

There is less incentive for providers to furnish you with fast speeds when you're out in the boonies and they know they are the only game in town for Internet access. In the city, there are more choices to select from and the pricing tends to reflect that.

And I am at that boundary (just over) too and 6.0 did not work reliably but 3.0 is rock solid, and overall the same effective throughput vs 6.0 constant resends and drop backs.

Fairpoint bought out the ISP that was here. Before it was CassTel and Fairpoint just keep the prices. We are going to call to see if there is anything faster than 1500/896, and we don't care how much it is more, we just need faster speeds. 1.5mbit is to slow now days.

Those prices are horrendous - they look like business class. Here in NH when Fairpoint took over from Verizon they maintained the same rates and even did away with annual contracts.

By way of comparison my Fairpoint 3000/768 DSL is $20 a month. You would think they would set the same DSL prices throughout their territory.

This is all they list on the web site. But if you call, you can get this.

All lines are unlimited usage and they are all ADSL2! They are on fastpath but first hop ping times are ~40ms....

This is really bad compared to the other ISP's in towns just north or south. North I can get 6/768 DSL for 35$ and south 5/768 for 45$

Actally the 3 mi or more more now typical... unless bad lines. No not at only 1.5 mbs introduction but now.

3.0 does just about as well with good lines, but 6.0 takes really ideal conditions, and distance to work right for now.

Can say but that is what I sub to and get... after briefly going to 6.0 I qualified for but was highly eratic and unreliable. 3.0 has before and after been rock solid to spec.

And line distance (not cow fies many confuse) I am in the 2+ mile range.... and 6mbs really needs to be in the 2mi or less range... 3.0 can go almost to the 1.5mbs range w.

For DSL, the distance factor is relative to a DSLAM. It is not necessary for a DSLAM to be located in a CO.

I'm at 18k feet and have had a solid 1.5/384 connection for almost 8 years.

Depends on the specific modem/router. If you have an all in one modem router combo it is easy. If you have separate modem and router it can be difficult.

Westells it is typically »192.168.1.1/transtat.htm

On my Netopia 3346 it is one of the troubleshooting pages (»192.168.2.1/StatTool).

Find the router's address. Often times this is 192.168.1.1 but could be any private address. For security will likely have to log in, again that depends on the specific router. Wonder around until you find it.

If you don't know the password try one of these defaults:
admin/admin
admin/admin1
admin/password
admin/password1
admin/serial number

hurfy posted : lol, i think i still pay almost $75 (3rd party ISP) for my old DSL line. Never upgraded from the original 640k (550 actual). Ping is pretty darn good and more bandwidth gets you more ping with qwest :(

I just stuck with what worked and the fact that the old ISP was awesome way back when DSL was a baby. Helped with a nice gamer setup that still works just fine.

i am adding a new dsl line to try in the other apartment so i don't have to do the one-way upgrade blind ;)

How unusual is that as a broadband offering?

Where I live that is that standard offering, pretty much the same for CATV, Cell Tower and DSL access. My ISP's DSL services cost me ₱1299 ($27) per month, plus around ₱530 ($11) for land line. The basic package is 384 kbps for ₱990 ($20). More bandwidth is available but the price goes up quite a bit from the basic plan. My DSL provider now offers up to 3 mbps ($62), but I'm about 4K from the nearest DSLAM and the best we've been able to work out is 512 kbps / 192 kbps. When I started with this service it was the only game in town. I also lived closer to the CO. That was back in early 2004. The service was a screaming 128 kbps back then and cost ₱2500 ($52) per month. They have slowly upgraded and I can now get 2 mbps for ₱1995 ($41).

The prices have gone down because we now have several competitors, In my area we have CATV, two cellular (except for my exact location, no line of sight to the tower) and another DSL provider. Most package are on a one or two year contract.

VT not a lot of desity to have RT's, so you are likely a long way from the CO and 256kb is all they can promise.... consider yourelf lucky you often do better than that.

As to price... well as you say they are the only horse in a one horse town. You ride it or walk. ;)

When I lived in VT dial up was the only option and unless you were in Burlington, Rurtland, Brattleboro, etc a long distance toll call as well.

Be interesting to check modem stats to see what sync rate is. The fact speed varies so much is an indication your ISP is grossly oversold. That is too bad because improving internal network performance and peering is relatively cheap.

If you want try doing a traceroute (tracert in Windows) to Broadband Reports during good times and bad. See if you can determine where bottleneck is.

as I said, I normally get more than the 256. Another reviewer said that Shorham.net has dialed down the promised speed, probably so that they don't overpromise to more remote customers. Obviously, I'm not happy with the speeds I get. If you were doing one thing at at time on one computer, yes you can watch a youtube video, but it does get bogged down with more than one computer and multitasking.

When there are slowdowns to the 200s, it does get bad. Fortunately we've had a few weeks with fewer such slowdowns.

Obviously my VOIP sucks ass when we're doing anything meaningful on the computers. don't try to watch videos and talk on the phone at the same time....
