"Important notice: GeoCities is closing"

I received the subject E-Mail from Rogers a couple of days ago indicating GeoCities is closing on 29 Oct 09. I've been looking around for another Personal Home Page provider and after checking out several recommended providers I'm strongly considering going with Yahoo Web Hosting. Here is the link to their site and info:
smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosti···ngup.php'

Basically, I like the relatively low cost and options especially having my own domain name and unlimited storage and data transfer. Other items like 1,000 email addresses and unlimited E-Mail storage is neat though I doubt I'd need that many addresses!
I'd appreciate comments from anyone who has experience with Yahoo Web Hosting. Is uploading easy using commonly available file transfer programs like Filezilla? Can I simply use my existing HTML files that I've created and used in GeoCities without having to go to a Yahoo template?

Of course I'm still bitter about losing GeoCities though it did have many shortcomings, and of course Briefcase, and discounts, and price increases ... makes me wonder why I stay with Rogers!

Thanks for your comments!!!

Garry

I'm not sure if they do, or whether GeoCities was a subcontracter. In any case, GeoCities was free through Rogers-Yahoo. The Yahoo I referenced is supposedly for small business users.

Geocities is strictly a Yahoo offering as is most other services. It was their decision to discontinue the service but the Yahoo small business hosting is a separate paid offering.

the letter and link.

The years of having other web sights link to my own, over time, will soon be lost. That is the effect I feel most. My page comes up number one on a google search. How do you replace that?

Cheers;
==============================================

Dear Rogers Yahoo! GeoCities customer,

We're writing to let you know that GeoCities, our free web site building service and community, is closing on October 26, 2009. On this date, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files.

What You Need to Do
If you're no longer using your web site, you don't need to do a thing, but if you'd like to move your web site, or save the images and other files you've posted online, you need to download your files to your own computer.

To quickly download your published files and images, visit your GeoCities web site, and choose Save As... or Save Page As... from your browser's File menu. Choose a location on your computer to save your files, then click OK or Save to save the HTML and images associated with your page. Learn more about downloading your files.

Please be aware that after October 26, 2009, your GeoCities files will be deleted from our servers, and will not be recoverable. If you'd like to save your files, you must download them.

Don't Wait
We encourage you to save your files to your own computer. If you need assistance, please visit our help web site.

We want to thank you for being a GeoCities user, and hope you continue to enjoy our other Rogers Yahoo! services.

Sincerely,

Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet Customer Service

Re: "Important notice: GeoCities is closing"

Garry,

Hi, it's not news. Back in April, Yahoo! has announced the closing of Geocities and we know it'll come to an end... »What happens now that GeoCities is closing?

It's sad to see Yahoo! losing battle to Google & can't maintain the ISP's "bundles" once included in our service. Well, no more newsgroup access, no more Flickr Pro account... I wonder how long Yahoo! will start charging ISPs for email too

I've been paying for Yahoo! Mail Plus even before signing up w/ Rogers (all my friends says I'm nuts), so I guess it won't be a shocker if one day we need to pay for the email service separately.

I have some other questions which I can't seem to get resolved at the Yahoo site. With GeoCities, I used my Rogers -Yahoo E-Mail address and password. Can I use the same with their web hosting or do I have to sign it with a new password? Even though I don't have a 'business' and this is a 'small business' Yahoo site can I still join, and if so do I have to get a special level of Yahoo membership first and at what cost?

The Yahoo site makes it look so easy, but doesn't give answers up front - you have to sign in/join before you can contact them it seems!!!
