Gizy : To play on what Willy said about #6, I'd play with selective color. That intertube is crying out to be in color, with the rest in black and white.

Your darkroom just takes on a different format these days. I like the comps for most, if not all of these, and that is usually the hardest part for people to learn. The processing just takes time....and experimenting. Just takes patience.

semotus : Thank you Willy I will follow your suggestions to try and improve these photos as well as others I take in the future.

Guess I got a little carried away with the number of photos included in my post, I'll limit myself to 1 or 2 images in the future as you advised.

Back 30+ years ago (gulp), I processed all of my film, did my own dark room work etc., absolutely love the smell of the chemicals and spending the day in the dark room.

Times change I know but since the switch to digital my heart just isn't in it like it once was and it shows in my shots. I miss hand dodging, burning, feathering. Just doesn't feel the same (to me) when working with photos on the computer. Definitely an attitude I'm going to have to change if I want to improve.

Thanks again Willy!

Willy : Hi semotus , welcome to the forum.
I saw your other post asking where to post for comments on you're photos. Like drew said, posting in the forum is better because more people will see it so you'll get more discussion.

I would suggest posting only one or two images at a time.
IMHO you'll get more detailed and useful feedback, instead of just a comment or two on each of 9 images.

Here are a few things that stand out for me.
1 & 3 - level out the horizons

5 I like this one, maybe play with a tighter crop though.

6 This is one I would take and play with for a long time. If it were my photo I wouldn't be satisfied with as is but I'd play with it until I was happy. One of those I'll know it when I see it things.
Two things that come to mind, brighten up the reflection of the tube, try adding some specular highlights to the water.

7 Washed out sky ruins this photo. Expose for the highlights to avoid this.

9 Pretty shot but the branches and limb on top are a a distraction. New crop if possible when taking the photo or clone them out in post processing.

jaykaykay : It's hard for me to really tell as your images are beyond the size of my monitor. I do see some things that even though not full size, I can comment on. #2 seems way too dark. I have difficulty seeing exactly what it is but guess that it's a child's water float. # 5 and 6 would do better with something to tie them to, such as the trees, done with the sky on your other shots and I haven't a clue what the other one is other than a bowl of cold cereal with an anchor floating in it or or just plain cement or dirt. Your others seem to have nice composition and detail, but again, it's hard to tell if not full size.
--
JKK:-)

Age is a very high price to pay for my maturity.
