 winged things | conspiring |
Earlier today I noticed a few little ants on my interior step going out to my garden. I have had the steps recently replaced in the last few weeks so I am not thinking there is a nest...and ... well... I squashed them and then muttered something about hoping I don't get bad ant karma
Several hours later -- they are EVERYWHERE! I lost count at 76 ish winged ones -- and a ton of little guys. I have sprayed and think I found where they are coming in...
but are these ants? I though there was only one queen and they had the wings. So either ... I have a zillion queens seeking retribution for my having squashed some children earlier ... or ... I dunno... some big arse ants have moved into the neighborhood.
Or ... are the winged ones not ants? I am hoping they are not termites? who love to hang out with ants?? |

| reply to bluerabbit Those are ants, not termites. Cant tell the size. Carpenter ant female "winged reproductives" are around 3/4" to 1 inch" long in this neck of the woods. The males are smaller, about 1/2". Minor workers are around 1/3" to 1/2". Major workers are around 3/4" long.
But it definitely looks like you have an ant nest there, and its swarming season. |

I just went through that myself and could only eliminate them with the help of an exterminator. Get them taken care of before they cause too much damage to the wood in your house otherwise you will regret it. |

| reply to Uhawl said by Uhawl :could only eliminate them with the help of an exterminator. Yes. Carpenter ants are usually beyond the capabilities and pesticides of most homeowners. Even some exterminators don't know how to take care of them. If he wants to use a surface spray along your baseboards, get a new exterminator.
I have a contract for carpenter ants. If I have ants, I just have to call and they take care of them. (One time, we found 6 separate nests in the siding.) The best part is they do an exterior spray every spring, and that seems to help a lot. -- It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice. |

| reply to bluerabbit Termites have straight bodies, ants are segmented. These are ants. They might be 'little black ants', might be carpenter ants. I tend to think they are little black ants due to the shape and size of the antennae. Hard to tell without a serious closeup. I used to scoop up 100's of these things and feed them to my pet toad. |
