| [Speed Problem] Disappearing DSL speed
For the past two year my DSL speed has approached the promised 1.5 on a rock steady basis - as measured by DSL reports speed test and others. Until two months ago. Then it has dropped to around 832 kpbs or less (again, measured.) When I had this issue two plus years ago, QWEST came out and fixed it at the DSLAM. After two infuriating weeks talking with the EL techs ("someone will call you back". No one does.) A senior EL tech got QWEST to come out again. The QWEST tech told me that I have never received 1.5, despite having done speeds test and also have the Xyxel web configuration site/"system status", also confirming it.
Additionally, QWEST also says that since they put in fiber optic to DSlam last year, EL's IP system does not work with it. (I have not idea what this means, that just what he said.)
Lastly, in past, I was told that EL has some kind of special booster on their lines at the CO so that marginal lines could get the 1.5. Now, nobody knows anything about this.
Sorry for the length of this, but if anybody has any ideas how I could have been getting 1.5 and now being told that it was never possible (!) and how I could get it back again. | | Doctor Olds I Need A Remedy For What's Ailing Me. Premium,VIP join:2001-04-19 1970 442 W30 clubs:
| A Qwest provisioned line for 1.5 Mbps DSL looks like this example.
»DSL not connecting quote: Downstream info: Bit Rate: 1536 Kbps Capacity Occupation: 20 % Noise Margin: 31.71 dB Attenuation: 44.82 dB Output Power: 19.73 dBm Upstream info: Bit Rate: 896 Kbps Capacity Occupation: 93 % Noise Margin: 12.00 dB Attenuation: 26.00 dB Output Power: 11.97 dBm
Are you seeing the correct 1536/896 Sync Rates? -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? | | Quimby

| reply to Quimby Hello Doc and thanks for the reply,
Not sure where you are obtaining that QWEST screen, but using the Web Configurator site for my Zxyel 660 R ELNK, I am currently obtaining what you see below.
Of note: Prior to mid May, the upstream speed in this diagnostic was usually around 832 kbps and downstream mostly around 1536. Sometimes the both were lower by a fewer hundred or so kbps. But never this low.
Also, I am aware that my 6db noise margin is problematic. However the best it has ever been is 9 db. Despite this I was for two years solidly getting the above noted connection speeds.
When I would run speed tests using DSL Report site, the Qwest site and/or the Speakeasy sites the measured speeds, while somewhat lower as would be expected, would be congruent with what the system status up/down speeds would be.
Curiously, while the QWEST tech told me that it has never been possible (?) for me to the 1.5 speed, but,if I switched to QWEST, it would be possible using the same DSLAM, etc.
Thanks.

| Are you using DSL filters on all the devices that are plugged into the phone jacks (except the Modem of course)?
If you are using DSL filters, how many total are in use?
Have you added any new phones or devices that plug into any telephone jacks?
Have you noticed any noise on the phone when talking to people?
If you pick up the phone with the Modem on as normal and then press 1 to dismiss the dial tone, do you hear any noise at all?
Have you tried testing out at the NID? That way you can get fresh sync speeds along with fresh Attenuation and SNR values. If they are better at the NID you very likely would need a Home Run install with a NID Splitter installed.

| reply to Quimby (Looks like the reply post I put up yesterday got lost, so here it is again...)
Hello Doc,
I had a home run installed several years ago, so when I began having problems, I tested at the NID. When the QWEST tech came out, his meter showed the same approx. slow connection speeds both at the NID as well as the box in the street. Now, both QWEST and EL state that due to the changes QWEST made to the line, 1.5 is NOT possible and that my only option is to quit EL and go to QWEST. Still, it is a mystery that I was getting 1.5 with EL until two months ago and QWEST claims the line changes were made a year ago when the fiber option lines were run.
Thanks. | |
