 | Christiansburg - still have unscrambled HD channels? I'll be moving back to Christiansburg next week and would like an update on JetBroadband's HDTV lineup. Comcast in Blacksburg is now scrambling all but the local networks, so I'm wondering if the same is true for Jet? |

 | Why not just get satellite? I can't understand why anyone would still be getting their TV programming through the cable company. The picture quality of cable (regardless of whether or not its "digital" cable), is horrible compared to satellite.
Right now, cable is the best option for high-speed Internet around here, but for TV, FORGEDDABOUDIT. |

 | I was interested in Jet for the Internet, the unscrambled HD channels were a nice surprise when I was in Radford because I did not subscribe to TV service.
If the channels were still unscrambled that would have eliminated the need for me to rent DVR equipment from the satellite company. I mostly only watch local network TV and have the necessary hardware already for recording clear-QAM cable through my HTPC.
Turns out that Jet Broadband does not have service past the 900 block of Oak Tree Blvd and don't have plans to build their network any further. Verizon says we can't get DSL either.
We've signed up with Dish Network for TV and are having NRV Unwired install equipment for their wireless Internet service. |

 | reply to perlkid Let me know how it goes with NRV Unwired. We're buying a house in Christiansburg soon (see my post a few threads down), and there's no cable there either. There's DSL available, but most people I know that have had Verizon DSL say it's terrible.
Either way it sucks to go from 8 megs to only 3.
I called the cable company and they said they'd go back out there and do some kind of "cost to build" survey or something, but I'm not counting on anything. There's maybe a dozen houses on our street that don't have cable, and if you're saying they won't even run lines in Oak Tree then there's pretty much no hope for me.
The way I understand it, most cable companies don't install new infrastructure unless they have to. They usually only do it when it's a part of their franchise agreement/renewal.
It's their loss. |
