Just to give an update on an old thread, I ended up ordering a Toshiba, one of the few brands that still have laptops with a PCMCIA Card slot, IEEE 1394 port, and unbelievable, a SERIAL port as well :) ..And one more plus, Windows XP Pro (instead of Vista, with free upgrade disc to Vista if I want to do that). The parallel port should not be a biggie, as you can buy a parallel to usb cable easily enough (though they are pricey).

You might need to consider a custom designed notebook for what you are looking for.
