| Electrical wiring causing slow download speeds
I have a server/networking closet that I installed myself. In the hallway is a 3-way light switch. When the lights are on in the hallway I get the advertised download speeds but when the light is off the download speed slows or stops. If I turn the light off and on during a download i can control when it pauses and starts back up again. I've tried changing the phone line to another wall within the closet and I have all of the networking/server equipment on a battery back up and the same thing happens if its working off the batter or house power. The home is 4 years old. Can anyone give me a clue about what is happening? Thanks. |

join:2009-07-18 Altus, OK | reply to jsrivard There are 3 switches in the hall that all control the same set of 3 incandescent lights (60watt each). I would assume that everything is properly grounded, how do I test for that on a light? There are no outlets connected to these switches. |

| reply to jsrivard You aren't giving us enough information to help you. Did you mess with the wiring? Did you hack into any circuit to get power into the closet? Is the phone line surge protected? Are any of the switches "dimmer" type?
Some pictures would be helpful. -- Looks like Reverend Wright got his wish - God Damn America. |

| reply to jsrivard What everyone else said. Lots of questions.
Couple more, have you taken the battery backup out completely (i.e not plug it it)?
The outlets for the lights and equipment is on on the same circuit? Did you add the outlets? Have you tried to (temporarily) run your equipment off a different circuit via an extension cord? |

He did say he ran it all strictly off the battery backup and it still does it. Seems to isolate the problem to the lighting circuit, perhaps RFI from a dimmer as nunya suggested? |

| reply to jsrivard Do you have your network wiring run adjacent to the electrical wiring? This could cause the issue you are discussing (even if one is in the wall and the other directly on the opposite side of the wall surface).
Even if your lights are incandscent, you could have other lights or appliances within the house that generate noise onto the AC wiring nearby your network wiring (even if the light is off). |

1 edit | reply to jsrivard Since you mention phone lines, I'd assume that you have DSL. DSL is susceptible to noise from dimmer switches, CFLs on twilight sensors and some halogen lamps. When the hall lights are on the current flow may mask the induced noise. Check your home/office for the mentioned lighting sources and try you downloads with any that you find removed or turned completely off. |

| reply to jsrivard Are you sure flipping off the lightswitch isn't turning off power to something (like the modem?)
Probably not... still it's worth checking. I found out that the "light switch" in one of my bedrooms turns off the lights---- and one outlet in the back corner of the room. :/ Maybe they were thinking LAMP or something, I dunno. -- "Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini

| reply to jsrivard Noise from the lamps is not the problem. Grounding incandescent lamps is not the problem. Do you have a meter to test grounds? Do you have any dimmer switches in the house? How repeatable is this problem? Is your phone wiring flat cable or twisted pair cat 3, 5?

1 edit | You need to run a dedicated CAT5E drop from your modem to the NID, away from any power. If you are trying to run a server off of plain house phone wiring, you arent any kind of sysadmin.
Instead of changing the hi volts, isolate and improve the low volts.
good luck
