So I found this outside near the front enterance of the condo complex. I think it's a dead tarantula, though if it is one, not sure why it's lurking about. Maybe it escaped

Since you found it near the front entrance, could this be someone's recently-deceased pet? Are there any windows nearby it could have been tossed out of?
I wouldn't think that tarantulas are native to MA, but I haven't a clue about that stuff. [shrugs] To my untutored eye, this has "somebody's pet" written all over it. -- We could use the £5,000 to buy a spoon. And then fill up with ice cream. |

| reply to dinferno Yes, it appears to be a tarantula, and there is almost no way it is native to the area. It is very like most of the Chilean Rose Hairs that I have had, though I'd need to see the top to verify. This is also the pose they use when molting, so unless you checked the rear body, it could just be a husk. If it is deceased, the rear body would be saggy and fluid filled (until something else started eating it); if a molt, it would only be the previous skin covering.
That's a good set of fangs on it. |

1 edit | reply to dinferno So there's a chance it maybe alive
There were lots of flies and others on it so I took it as a sign that it went off to spidey heaven...
So should I leave it be, inform the condo management, other options? |

I'd put a shovelful of dirt on it myself (or, better yet, give the super a call and have him do it).
Speaking for myself, I'm all for letting nature "take its course" until it, uh, starts drawing flies. Then it's time for a shovel. -- We could use the £5,000 to buy a spoon. And then fill up with ice cream. |

That's funny you mentioned that; i just had a conversation with my friends and she was saying how she went to the pet store and then she started scratching her arm, the pet store owner came over and told her to go wash her arm because she must have got tarantula hair on her arm.
Love to have one of them as a pet. Good way to impress the ladies. I'd love to show my friend my spider....(oops, that sounds bad) she'd have a meltdown for sure! -- "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943 |

Does tarantula hair contain an oil that acts as an irritant? Or is it the texture of the hair itself that causes skin irritation?
I'm glad I know this now because, somehow, I thought it was safe to let tarantulas walk over you (provided you don't startle them). -- We could use the £5,000 to buy a spoon. And then fill up with ice cream. |

| reply to dinferno It looks like it's a Red Cedar Tarantula. They are native of the Brighton, MA area and usually are found near condos hanging out with the lady spiders.

| reply to Mr Neutron As far as I am concerned, it is safe. I never had trouble with any hairs. It is a defensive technique to flick hairs, it can irritate the skin, but it is very mild. Just rinse off with cold water (you don't want to open up your pores) and you shouldn't have any problem.
Off topic, but the coolest part is the little barbs on the bottom of their "feet." Those stick to your skin like velco and you get a slight "tug" with each step. |

| reply to dinferno Yup. That is one dead tarantula.

What's that?
OT: An old friend had a pet tarantula named Roscoe. He made a leash with a velcro collar that wrapped around the spider's thorax and would take him for walks. The spider was very cooperative on the way out, but never wanted to go back and had to be carried. I think he thought he was escaping. -- Team Discovery/ ~ Project Hope ~ |

| reply to Arelay looks like an hour glass. Are you sure this isn't the dreaded Black Widow Tarantula.
There is NO way I would have a pet spider damn that's creepy. Sticking to your skin like Velcro...and letting them crawl on you, shooting hairs at you...OMG! why not have pet tick? -- An army of sheep led by a lion, will always defeat an army of lions led by a sheep. |
