 | A Comparison of Internet providers During the course of creating a presentation about the sad state of the Internet in Canada I created an excel spreadsheet that compared the current plans from almost all of the major Internet providers in Ontario. I felt that I should share my findings with the rest of the people here. You can find a download link here: »www.megaupload.com/?d=GC2VOGXE
Within the spreadsheet you'll find some columns concerning the time it takes to reach the bandwidth cap for each plan. These numbers were calculated assuming that each connection was saturated completely for that length of time, and that you were operating at the maximum speed available for that bandwidth profile without factoring in connection overhead. Some of the numbers are quite surprising. |

Here is an updated version that fixes the problem with Teksavvy's unlimited offering. And I realize that I did not take overhead into account. This was supposed to just be a simple calculation to give you an overview of what each provider offers. Also I wasn't sure of the formula to factor in said overhead. |

I know you're trying to cover "almost all of the major internet providers in Ontario" but if this is supposed to be a report then you need to include MANY more providers that are also "major players" at least on regional levels....
If you are serious about getting input, post this over in Canadian Broadband. -- Nexicom High Speed Internet - »www.nexicom.net/ |

 | reply to valunthar I guess I should amend that to the major providers that I was aware of at the time that I created the spreadsheet. This wasn't intended to be more than something that I had created over the course of my research that I decided to share with everyone as the findings were quite surprising. But it may be worth amending it with the missing information and keeping it as a comprehensive list for all of the providers in Canada. |

| reply to valunthar I was going to do that sort of thing (albeit with a web interface where other users could enter their info) a while ago, but could find any round tuits. I did register the .com, though. It's specifically based on how much time you get with each provider per month with a saturated connection, which, AFAIK, no other site logs.
If I ever do get those round tuits, you mind if I use your data? |

 | reply to Alittlegreen Of course, Montreal Dsl is only a reseller or TekSavvy. Nothing More!
It's always been a joke that they are even on Canadian ISP listed as a provider. All Teksavvy resellers should actually be banned from Canadian ISP if they don't conduct their own billing. Most Teksavvy resellers actually have a generic signup page (like Montreal Dsl does), and customers get billed by TSI Internet on their statements.
This doesn't constitute an seperate/independent ISP
Let the games begin !! |

Unlike Bell's contention that Teksavvy is just a reseller of Sympatico. |

 | Well if an ISP buys service wholesale and sells it to the general public via a separate retail channel, with it's own billing system and customer service, then I would consider it an bonafide ISP.
Now if a company just uses a white label product as their front, and collects a tiny monthly commission from the actual provider, then I would consider them a NON-ISP.
Would not you ?? |

| reply to valunthar www.canadianisp.com sucks in the way it presents data. I just did a search for all service in my city and here's the headings on the table it presents:
- ISP - 3 month rating - Selected service - (Grouping) Offerings by service type
Sure, I can click all 30+ ISPs and get the info I actually care about (of which this table listed none) that way. And then I can take notes and make a table myself. Even if I did that, 90% of the ISPs I clicked don't list the critical information I care about: caps! |
