| Netbook: Recovery Disc
Hi All,
I have an acer netbook 1635 that does not have a rom drive. I have the system disc and recovery disc but want to pu this onto a usb key so that if needed I can restore from it. Is there a way to do this? I have found methods for linux based netbooks but not for win xp. Anyone have a know how? -- War doesn't determine who's right, just who's left...."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." |

| You can get the Acer netbook accessory pack which comes with a ext USB cd rom drive, a mouse, and case for $99...
I am not sure about the restore discs if you can put them on USB or not. I just made a XP Pro USB key for my D150, and then copied my drivers to it. I didn't want all the BS that the factory install came with. |

1 edit | reply to jmc67 Make a bootable image(ISO) from your XP CD with nLite. »www.nliteos.com/nlite.html
Then use UnetBootin to put it on a Stick. »unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ -- Gladiator Security Forum: www.gladiator-antivirus.com/

| reply to jmc67 I am trying to avoid having to make put more money into the netbook but thanks for the suggestion. When you say "copied my drivers to it", do you mean when you install from the usb key the drivers are installed at the same time or do you have to install manually after windows install? What application did you use to put xp on the usb key? -- War doesn't determine who's right, just who's left...."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." |

| reply to jmc67 The BIOSes of modern computers support booting from various devices, including USB drives and network (PXE).
The very first thing I do after unpacking any PC that comes with a preinstalled OS, is to image the hard drive with Norton Ghost. I just installed MS-DOS (actually the DOS code from Windows 98 SE) on an 8 GB USB flash drive, added ghost.exe from Ghost 2003, and created a 6.5 GB image of the netbook's hard drive, before I even boot from it for the first time. You can do the same. |

Broccoli - I would kill for a bootable CD of MS-DOS where I could actually INSTALL it if I needed it. |

Any CD mastering software worth using supports El Torito extensions to create bootable discs. You can download floppy images from bootdisk.com (not sure about the legality of it, but that site has been up for quite some time now), and create bootable CDs from them (I myself use ImgBurn).
One thing that I still haven't figured out is how to use MSCDEX with USB drives. |

1 edit | I know that this is a bit off topic but there is a utility mentioned in this that may be able to help you.
There is a utility mentioned in the article that allows you to make a bootable USB flash drive from any ISO CD/DVD image file. Once you make the ISO files from those disks you have you can then make bootable USB flash drives from those ISO files. -- Tom |
