[Internet] Bell Dialup access while away from DSL

My dad's on Bell DSL but spends quite a bit of time @ the cottage. His plan includes 20hrs of dialup per month. There's no cell nor highspeed of any kind available. The closest dialup is long distance. Is there any toll free access # for Bell internet?

It'd be nice if he could get/send email & pay bills while out there. Would save several trips back & forth.

Cheers.

No, there is no 800# dialup access. The full list of dialup POPs can be found here.

Ya that lookup is useless. It doesn't find anything even remotely close to the cottage.
I'm guessing I'm going to have to get an 800 # & institute a POP on my connection. I'd prefer it on his as he's got great speed (largely because Bell keeps telling people in his neighbourhood that they can't get DSL as it's not available in that neighbourhood!)
Time to do a cost analysis - LD costs versus 800 # POP setup & utilizing the anticipated data useage.

Don't be so sure. Bell has been known to use larger calling areas for their dialup POPs than are available. It also uses other providers such as Telebec in Quebec for dialup POPs.

The easiest way to test is to find the nearest local calling area and dial.

I'm not trying to be rude, but did you go looking in the dropdown on the left, or put the cottage TN in on the right? If your cottage is in Ontario or Quebec, other than in 807 or the far north of 705, you should find something local. I played around with some local exchanges for very small communities (like Dacre, ON) and found local dialup from there.

What area is the cottage in (specifically, what community is the telephone exchange for it), and what are the area code and first three numbers of the phone number (eg/ 613-825)? This forum has all sorts of folks who are good at either knowing things or finding them out.

I would post in the direct forum.

They have better access to Bell records. Ask then if 160k is available.

Yes its slow , but its better than Dialup

There would be nothing but dialup. There's no DSL infrastructure there. Heck they just moved from party-line in the last couple of years!

I tried both the drop down & the direct lookup. Nada.
The exchange is 899 so it's reasonably remote (that's why the cottage is there).

Is this area serviced by Bell or the local service run by independent telephone company? Some of the independents have been keeping up with (or exceeding) in the number of services they offer, however some have not. The fact you mention the company finally moved people from party lines to single lines seems to suggest the latter one is the case. I have a feeling that Bell never offered a toll-free access number for offering dial-up as this would deny them of extra revenue (service + tolls fees).

Fun tool for finding the companies responsible for phone services on certain exchanges (NXX) or area code (NPA).

If you can find a Bell dialup number that is close, use this tool to see if it is considered a local call.

If you are positive that there is no way to access a Bell dial-up access point without paying long distant I would complain to the Bell Canada Executive Office of Customer Relations (which does have a toll free number) 1-866-317-3382.

It's definitely Bell. I've worked for all the telecommunications companies in the north & only Bell services this area (out of Sudbury! 4 hours away when there's a Bell-owned company 1 hour away!)

Those are useful tools for some other things I have on the go but I already knew that the closest is LD. I checked anyway (one never knows) but I was right.

Ya I doubt that will do any good. They're Bell. They don't listen to us little folk- they don't have to.
I used to be a major shareholder & they didn't listen then. They certainly aren't now.
