If that's the same one I sent back (to a different dealer)... you DON'T want it.

The output was about twice as high as the new replacement I got. Either certain phasing in the music or ripples on the surface of the vinyl caused a "pulsing" sound... like the volume rapidly cutting in and out. Pretty sure it was wired wrong internally. I checked my connections plenty of times because I did not want to have to send my brand new cart back.

The new one sounds pretty good. A little "thick" sounding like the Shure, but a little more presence. Can't do any rips right now because my system's kind of rearranged at the moment.

So the shure M97XE is a good buy then?

I need to start working on my turntable just haven't found time enough to start cleaning out the gunk.

Is it just me or do I hear some wow and flutter in this video?

(youtube clip)

I'm back, replying to old posts!

You can't really tell sound quality from that video, for a couple reasons.

I do hear a bit of wowing, but at the same time, I have also had many cases where 45s don't fit the spindle adaptors quite right, and so I usually end up getting much better results by centering them, myself. Of course I have MANY 78s that are like this as well. I'm sure the record in this video is probably not quite centered, either.

As for fluttering, I have posted stuff up on YouTube that had absolutely no noticeable flutter, only to have the end result appear to have something sounding a bit like flutter. Digital compression, especially the amount used on YouTube, can do funny things, sometimes.

In this particular case however, even if it weren't for YouTube, I wouldn't have any idea of how this setup sounds, simply because the recording was not made by using a direct connection.
Instead, it was made using a microphone, which means I am now hearing the turntable, plus the speakers, plus the room noise, plus the room echo, plus the weaknesses of the microphone on the camera, etc.
LOTS of interference, here. ;)

I was probably hoping for just a lttle more "something extra" than it delivers. It can sound just a touch grainy at times like the Shure. But, it's performance does seem to match it's price. It seems to sound a little more agreeable to me than any other modern cart I've bought for less. Guess you just have to spend more than I thought to get a really 1st rate cart like Steely's and Howie's AT15s these days.

I picked up a vintage Audio Technica PRO13E and an AT13Ea (which came attached to Dual 522 in pretty nice shape). Haven't even tried the PRO13E yet. I think I prefer the "a" model over my 440MLa or Shure. So, some of the older mid-level Audio Technicas seem like a better option under $100.00 if one can find a cheap cartridge body and buy a NOS stylus for around $60.00. There are also the Audio Technica AT110E and AT95E I've read sound very good for a bargain price. But, I haven't heard them.

I'm not nuts about the M97xE. It sounds pretty good tone wise. But, I feel like I'm straining to hear leading edges and background noise seems invasive during quiet passages. The Blue has just a little more "zing" and seems to do better in these areas. I definitely find it more listenable. It does seem to share a slightly thick midrange and subdued detail with the Shure, but that little bit more presence makes all the difference.

Hard to say on the wow and flutter after YouTube gets done with the sound... lol... or is that what you were talking about? My favorite quote:

"If you don't wear a sliderule on your belt (even in the shower), you don't need any test records. All they seem to do is make people unhappy with their systems, when they could be enjoying music instead."

I don't really agree with that, although there IS a hint of truth in the statement. Unfortunately, when it comes to turntables and cartridges, rather precise measurements and adjustments are critical in order to minimize record wear and maximize the listening experience. It's just the nature of the beast. Many people can achieve near-optimal results without a test record, however, if it can help, then it's worth using one (even if it reveals flaws and weaknesses in your set-up).

Exactly. Plus, I like it, because it allows me to fine tune the adjustments a lot quicker, than I would be able to just by normal listening. As for exposing equipment flaws, while this record does do that, that isn't really its intent. It's about trying to get the best possible sound out of your cartridge as possible. Like anything, you have to respect the fact that NOTHING is perfect, and that definitely goes for anything audio related.

I think that if this record is actually *making* someone dislike his equipment that he was once happy with, then perhaps he's not using it correctly ;)
it's not like your music is actually going to sound any different after you use this, or anything - unless you make changes while using it, of course.

Besides, since some adjustments require constant checking, rechecking, re-rechecking, re-re-re checking - uhm .... you get the idea -, I would MUCH rather be doing this on a more durable test record with noise and tones, than on a record which has something on it that I might actually like listening to.
