Re: Levin criticizing non-profits & gov't too; not just industry

Free Press's filing was amazing.
Only in one respect: that Free Press thought that their half baked, recycled, falsehood-laden, and plainly Google-funded lobbying agenda was credible in any respect. Such gall and hubris are, indeed, amazing.

Yes, I did. The Free Press comments said, "Regulate everything. Except Google. And make sure that the regulations favor Google."

They must be getting quite a lot of Googlebucks.

Brett, you truly are the king of recycling.

It's worth noting that Robb Topolski is employed by the New America Foundation, an "astroturf" lobbying group in Washington, DC which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Google. (Its Chairman is Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and Google -- via Schmidt -- is its largest source of funds.) Consumers must be wary of organizations which claim to be acting in the "public interest" but in fact are corporate "sock puppets."

If they are lobbying for a telco or cable company, only then can they be called corporate sock puppets. If you lobby for Google, then you are on the side of the angels.

Re: Levin criticizing non-profits & gov't too; not just industry

I see. And what if I'm actually out there building the Internet, 7 days a week, and have no lobbyists working for me? (This is true in my case. A WISP never rests.)

I occasionally do talk to policy makers in DC, but they are so used to seeing only slick industry lobbyists that very often they don't know what to think. A very sad state of affairs.

By the way, Free Press also falsely claims in its report that WISPs don't deploy in areas served by DSL and cable (false) and understates our market share by a factor of about 8. Why is Free Press so anti-WISP? Because their arguments for heavy regulation are founded on the false claim that there's no competition. The fact that WISPs are competing very well (and would do better if government just got out of the way!) is inconvenient to them.

The sad thing, Brett, is I've gone to bat for the small ISP a number of times.

You're a difficult person, to the maximum. I don't deserve the shit that you spew. But I can't let that personal issue play a part in whatever advocacy that I do for broadband/internet or related technologies. (I'm not the only one in DC that feels that way -- that we advocate FOR an abusive jerk -- we could start our own Brett Glass support group.)

Uhhh, Google has actual employees in that role.

Just who do you think are Google's Sock Puppets?

If you're about to say: Free Press, Public Knowledge, New America Foundation, Consumer's Union, Media Access Project ... don't embarrass yourself. I think, if you look, that nearly all of these existed before Google climbed to the top of the heap and some of them have taken positions contrary to Google (e.g. Google's book deal). I know all of these organizations -- none of them trade advocacy for money. You donate because you support their positions, not to get their support.

Wrongo, bucko.

1. I remain my own self whose opinions are bound to be at variance with any employer. Think about that, Brett, they hired me after I said pretty much all I had to say on key issues. Now they either agree with me, or they're willing to look the other way in the areas where they don't agree with me.

2. I don't represent NAF here but I can tell you that I know that Google doesn't "wholly own" NAF. (Hell, it appears to me that Microsoft gave more money to NAF than Google did!) But most of NAF's money comes from foundations. The donors don't direct my work, my positions, nor my opinions. I don't clear my positions with anyone before I give them.
