Re: DIR-655 1.32 firmware - DNS relay issue (fixed) said by bananaman:How is this relevant to this discussion of the DNS Relay issue? said by tipstir:B1 model is being released it has Ub 475MHz NPU and 64MB of RAM new PCB and new layout. The external side graphic are larger. It doesn't use Realtek Gig Controller it use Atheros base Gig Switch. Layout looks cheap like the A4 model was. I just saying they might have fixed the issue you all and me have with B1 release. Increase the ram since 16mb isn't really enough for the DIR-655. |

 | reply to iphonebb So we have gone about 2 months since last firmware release and I still show no new beta firmware trying to fix this issue. I still get plenty of spam dlink email weekly though.
Tonight router was reloading itself about ever 4~5 mins. Turned off a few other options and appears some how related to Securespot or Use Unicast on WAN side. After turning those off, router has been up over 30 mins now. |

4 edits | reply to John97 But, I just had a lockup. I just had to reboot. Nothing else I could do. Frustrating... Yep. Same here. I finally gave up, tried a Belkin N+ (it has it's own issues) and settled on a WRT54GS. There's just no functional N routers right now. |

I use it with WD Passport on USB Still WAN is fast and LAN gig ports too. |

Not sure if it was dropping packets or just not passing every port, but I was not able to connect to my company VPN. I was tired of troubleshooting router problems, so I just plugged in the Linksys G since I didn't need N and just wanted something to work. |

My wife had the same issue when she had tried from here but that was an issue with the VPN ACE Server on the host side. Once that was fixed she could use Cisco VPN client without issues through Belkin N+ |

 | Wouldn't surprise me if that were the problem here also. We're using an older version of the Checkpoint VPN that doesn't work with Vista. It's a Fortune 500 company and no word on when that will be updated. |

Her company is one of those Fortune 500's, but anyway VPN clients I've use and supported through out the years I prefer Nortel VPN Client. Cisco VPN Client okay. Outsource company use by the wife company always have issues when so many of employees work from home.
Anyway it's G enabled DELL Latitude latest model. It does gig and N but admin rights are restricted by her profile. I let the Belkin N+ handle only N wireless connections. I have a couple of Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 around the house for Wireless G MIMO running DD-WRT firmware. Those routers best for Access Points. Never issue with them. Belkin N+ gig features are excellent. N still in draft but I am hoping my investment in that router won't go wasted if Belkin doesn't come out with the standard N firmware for it.
On home base wireless laptops I use Juniper Networks Odyssey Access Client which has EAP+TLL encryption on wireless side can also be use on wired side connections. To me that does a better job then any of the other wireless access client utilities that come with most 802.11g/n adapters. |

I though that my router was a great product when I first bought it, but then I had some problems with my Belkin N USB device. So I thought I'd update my firmware and it ends up practically breaking the product!?
WTF? I had a WBR-2310 before, and that router locked up almost as much as my DIR-655 after I updated the firmware. Why did they even release a firmware update? They should have a large disclaimer across their firmware site: "Do not upgrade if your router works".
Thanks for settings I'll try these out and hope that I get at least 4-5+ days uptime. |

veldy join:1999-08-04 Minneapolis, MN | reply to iphonebb I have had a DIR-655 and have pushed it for years (I bought it soon after it first came out and it is A2 hardware). I have been running 1.21 firmware for a long time now and only decided to upgrade when I was told that 1.32NA was available and it had secure spot software in it and 1.21 wasn't handling VoIP as well as the previous 1.11 version which lacked the guest zone that I also like. So, I backed up my configuration file and loaded the new firmware and restored the config file. No good ... it barely worked and it was miserable. So, I reset to factory defaults and set all the parameters manually and things were working great for the first day. Then suddenly, it quit passing traffic [although lights were blinking like mad and there was clearly traffic on the cable modem]. So, after a power cycle, it was working again. I went through this about four times, each time sooner than the previous time. The last time a power cycle did NOT fix the problem. Even the login screen would not come up. When I disconnected from the cable modem, the login screen comes up, but it won't let me login ... no error given, just back to the login screen. The thing has become a brick. I have NOT tried the reset button and I didn't bother considering it says I can not downgrade the firmware.
Long story short ... my long love affair with D-Link has come to an end and I threw the thing in the closet to give to an enemy should I make one. I went out and bought the Cisco WRT610N and it does EVERYTHING that I want including handling QoS better for VoIP on cable connections that support PowerBoost (or similar) such as Comcast so I am not forced to limit my upload to the lower sustained rate. All in all, it is a better router, EVEN with the internal antenna it does a much better job. It took a lot less time to configure as well and I now have 5.0GHz (although no use for it as of yet). My devices that have G (I recommend you set your setting to 20Hz only if you use mixed mode) have better reception in the corners in the basement where there is no line of site and a metal furnace in between ... and I am referring to an iPod Touch (gen 2) which does not have fabulous reception to begin with and it never worked well with the D-Link in that location (even when picking a low channel to get a longer wavelength and thus better distance).
Since D-Link is so willing to release garbage firmware and essentially ruin equipment that customers rely upon then I am no longer willing to be a future customer of theirs. They are back to where they used to be 4 years ago ... at the bottom of the heap. |

Actually there are several. I can personally recommend (although it's a bit off-topic) Vigor DrayTek 2820Vn which I own, what an amazing router!! So far every single router I have tested made by DrayTek has proven to be excellent. You do pay a premium for their products, but you certainly get what you paid for. |

I can't believe I upgraded the firmware.
That DIR-655 worked so well, and then I go an upgrade the firmware even though the little voice in the back of my head is going "don't do it! don't do it!". And sure enough, the router locks up every 3-4 days.
I've spent a month working on this. Both with D-Link ("yeah, send it back and we'll send you a brand new one!" --> "he told you that? Well, since it's more than a year old, we can't help you. Sorry."), grepping forums (turning off DHCP doesn't fix the issue), and have finally just given up.
Thanks for the recommendation for the Linksys WRT610N. I've vowed never to buy Linksys again, but with the quality of consumer routers these days, you have to get egg on your face every now and again.
