| Sounds worse than it actually is From the article, people are making gripes, but most aren't the sort you'd cancel service over.
Delays in MMS functionality and iPhone tethering iPhone users have lived without these things for over 2 years. Does it stink that AT&T can't get their act together faster? Sure. But, it's coming.
the carrier's tendency to cripple high-bandwidth applications What US carrier doesn't do this when they have the opportunity? The "jesus provider" Verizon certainly has never had a problem crippling things when its in their best interests.
continued complaints of poor 3G network performance Of the gripes, this is the most valid. Still, I've seen significant improvements in 3G performance over the last year. I definitely think they've got more work to do. I'm glad people are complaining - it ought to help motivate AT&T to work on it. Really though, it's not anything new. It mostly boils down to tower proximity. When I've got good signal my data performance is great.
most recently visual voicemail outages I'm sure you're aware of the tethering hack that's available for the iPhone. All you have to do is browse to a certain web page on the phone, and you can turn on tethering. What people didn't figure out right away is that there's a side effect to doing this that's not immediately noticeable - Visual Voicemail appears to work normally, but it stops alerting you to new calls.
So let's recap: People find tethering loophole that impairs Visual Voicemail. Shortly after, there are reports of visual voicemail outages. Do you think that's a coincidence? I don't. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. Delivered.

gigahurtzPremium join:2001-10-20 Palm Coast, FL | I agree with a majority of your post, however, my biggest gripe with AT&T in my area is their extremely unreliable data connection. I am in an EDGE area which is extremely slow and cripples the phone. Yes, I knew we had EDGE when I purchased the phone but did I think it would cripple the phone? No. In other areas where EDGE is provided, I don't have issues. In my City, I constantly get delayed visual voicemail notifications, dropped data connections and severe slow downs.
3G can't come soon enough. Any information on when 3G is coming to Palm Coast, FL? |

 | reply to gigahurtz The reason I will not buy an iphone for myself is that they (ATT) expect you to pay $400 for a phone that they will not sell insurance on even though ipods and iphone are the #1 and #2 most stolen electronic devices. I'll just have to muddle though with a smart phone they will insure (currently Samsung Epix).
I have had ATT since it was ATT mobility, then Bellsouth Mobility, then Cingular and now ATT again. I pay full price for the phones because I have a 12 or 13 year old rate plan that they must continue to honor until I sign a new contract. $39.99 1000 rollover, free nights and weekends, free ATT to ATT calls, free roaming, unlimited text messaging, voice mail, email and data.
I would pay them for the iphone if only they would insure it. I bought one for my son and he says people in the University he attends are always complaining about stolen iphones. |

 | reply to djrobx It's estimated AT&T will lose 1/3rd of their iPhone customers if they lose their exclusivity. That's an incomprehensibly massive churn rate.
Features like MMS and tethering are always "coming". Just over the horizon...wait a bit longer....wait....wait for it. By the time they're actually implemented new and better technologies, more interesting and bandwidth-intensive applications are available that people all over the world except in the US use.
And your assertion that they've improve on their network in the last year is just imbecilic. The burden is on you to prove that, considering most reports I've seen is that things have actually gotten worse over the last year. |

 | reply to Romney2012 These experts doing the estimates aren't basing it off of arbitrary feelings.
If you have a favorite phone, you likely have a favorite carrier. This applies especially to iPhone users, and that carrier is especially not likely to be AT&T.
Problems with AT&T's network are so widespread and the resulting national PR so negative that there's a widespread perception among users that AT&T's network is 'bad'.
All that points to a high % of fleeing customers. |

So, the original iPhone doesn't include MMS (a decades-old technology) in their phone, and they play it off as nothing serious.
Then the iPhone3g doesn't have MMS, and again, they say Apple is correct that they don't need MMS.
Now, Apple FINALLY includes the decades old technology in their "smart"phone, and suddenly ATT is the hell spawn for not implementing the feature immediately (which, btw, they had to disable on iPhone accounts because they are the ONLY phones with data plans which couldn't get MMS)!
Go Figure.
Apple holds it back for 2 years, and it's not an issue in the least. ATT holds it back for a few months and it's time to bring out the torches. -- "What makes us omniscient? Hell, many people again CHOSE to reup their contract with ATT after they became upgrade-eligible for the iPhone 3gs.
