Very strange indeed. You say a vcr can cause aeronautical problems? Would you mind elaborating with what you know about this?
Most people don't directly hookup their cable directly to their TV. They could be going through splitters, VCRs, etc.. Common hookup is "Cable -> VCR -> TV". A cable could possibly leak if there's an uncapped cable input/output. Or maybe bad shielding.
