It looks as if Google has filed a patent »www.gomonews.com/google-applies-···m-voice/ for advertising during the dead space time when people are not speaking on a Google Voice call. I am sure that MagicJack will vigorously contest this patent application and probably has patents of its own.
Personally, I feel that it would be proper if MagicJack inserted a 60 second delay prior to placing a call during which time they could serve a voice advertisement to the calling party. The 60 second ad would be applicable to those who used the service normally with say no more than 60 minutes of call time per month. Between 60 and 120 minutes the call would be delayed for 2 minutes of advertising and for the blabbermouths that use over 120 minutes per month they would be subjected to 3 minutes of advertising prior to their call being placed.
Of course an exception would have to be made for 911 calls with perhaps a minimal 30 second delay for a voice advertisement prior to placing the call.
Furthermore, I believe that it would be appropriate to insert voice ads if there was a break in the conversation, either silence or heavy breathing.
This is the modern way and is the future of telephony. |

| I believe that most people will stay with MagicJack when the voice ads start to play. It is still quite a bargain, surely most people can spare a few minutes out of their day so as to listen to telephone voice ads. Time has value and for most people their time is of little value. |

Maybe your time has little value - but in my world, time is money. And if you ain't got the money, I ain't got the time. -- The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of the blessings. The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of misery.

A 20-second ad would be reasonable to me. Like those web pages prefaced by an advertisement.
Ads are about impressions. I think a 60-second ad would make the wrong impression. You don't want to annoy people just because you can. It shouldn't be too burdensome.

said by BlueMagic :...I believe that it would be appropriate to insert voice ads if there was a break in the conversation, either silence or heavy breathing. OMG, why didn't I think of that? Just think, marketeers could transmit targeted ads depending on the nature of the break in the conversation.
For silence, the parties would hear a blurb pushing digital hearing aids. For heavy breathing, the message could advertise a salacious porn site. If a sneeze or cough or sniffle interrupts the conversation, an ad for a cold remedy would be heard. The sound of running water in the background during a conversational pause might result in a short message for an herbal prostate remedy.
And don't get me started on the "pauses" that would yield those musical adds for Cialis and Viagra!

Frankly, upon hearing such an advertising message for the first time, I would rip the phone's power cord out of the wall and go back to POTS ... heaven forbid. |

That hasn't panned out. It seems like something will have to change. (Higher prices, or pre-call ads.).
I don't see Dan implementing audio ads. It took him two years just to introduce the first enhancement: the ability to disable voice mail. I don't think has the staff (or talent) to affect significant changes.
That assumes Dan's in this as a long-term phone service. My impression has been that he's just floating a proof of concept, waiting for a buyer.
With Google entering Dan's space, patenting what should have been Dan's patents, I think it's inevitable that MJ will change. Dan will either treat it as a long-term business (instead of a game of Three-Card Monti). Or, he'll be motivated to sell at a discount.
This might be good (a more reliable, feature-rich service). But, it's probably going to mean more cost (either audio ads, or $10 per month).

1 edit | What if Dan has a secret plan to turn all magicJack users into affiliates? Assume that you are in the middle of a conversation and you need a break plus a chance to earn say 50 cents as a magicJack affiliate. Just hit ### and a voice would come on the line saying, And now a word from our sponsor, magicjack. After a 3 minute or longer ad, you can set the time by the number of # clicks, you can return to the conversativin, rested and relieved. It the other person on the call orders a magicjack then you earn a fast clean 50 cents. |

1 edit | reply to BlueMagic I don't why you would want ads on magic jack enough to create a topic on it. It's like your asking for them.
Anyways I would not mind a 15 to 20 sec ad before I placed a call, but if they made the person I am calling or the person that calls me listen to an ad I would throw it away and just pay for something without ads.
Imagine if they made someone wait for an ad while calling 911. -- For those of you playing a drinking game.... MY FRIENDS! |

| Actually, most 911 calls are just people calling who want a free ride to the hospital. We have a commuter station next to a major hospital and people are always calling 911 so as to order an ambulance to take them to the hospital. Once they arrive, they announce that they are feeling much better and jump out of the ambulance so as to catch a train.
Perhaps if they had to listen to a short 30 second magicjack ad prior to calling 911, they would reconsider their inconsiderate behavior. |

How would he know about this alleged ambulance problem?
If it's such a big problem that it made the papers, then he can send us a link.
If it didn't make the papers, how does he know about it? |
